A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to over 14 years in prison for multiple offenses related to the exploitation of a 14-year-old girl. Shaun Fox was convicted during a hearing at the Cambridge Crown Court on August 13, 2023, where the judge described him as “predatory and determined.”

Fox, a resident of Swanspool, Ravensthorpe, pleaded guilty to several serious charges. These included six counts of breaching a sexual harm prevention order, distributing an indecent photograph, and engaging in sexual communication with a minor. He also caused the girl to view sexual activity and attempted to persuade her to engage in inappropriate acts.

The case began when Fox, posing as a 17-year-old boy, initiated contact with the victim on Instagram on May 18, 2023. Using a pseudonym, he requested explicit photographs and offered to send her videos to rate. His actions escalated as he pressured her to engage in sexual behavior. The situation came to light when the victim’s mother discovered the messages and intervened by posing as her daughter.

After posing as the victim, the mother received three child abuse videos from Fox. During the exchange, he requested that messages be deleted, indicating awareness of his wrongdoing. The Cambridgeshire Police were able to trace Fox through an email address linked to the Instagram account. They also obtained CCTV footage showing him purchasing a mobile phone from a local store.

Fox was arrested at his home on July 1, 2023. In police interviews, he made the troubling claim of feeling like a “17-year-old trapped in the body of a 43-year-old man.” This statement prompted Judge Grey to respond during sentencing, calling it “self-serving rubbish.” He emphasized that Fox had planned and executed a predatory scheme, stating, “You made a plan, and you executed it. Your regret, in my opinion, is that you were caught.”

The judge also acknowledged the severe impact of Fox’s actions on the victim and her family, stating that her life would be “unrecognizable” due to his exploitation. He made it clear that the victim’s parents bore no blame for the crime.

Detective Constable Jon Edwards, who led the investigation, remarked on the severity of Fox’s offenses and praised the victim and her family for their bravery throughout the ordeal. He stated, “The custodial sentence reflects the severity of Fox’s offences and the judge’s comments emphasise how dangerous he is.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Fox was placed on the sex offenders register for life and given a lifelong sexual harm prevention order. A ten-year restraining order was also imposed, ensuring that he cannot contact the victim or her family.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges of child exploitation and the efforts of law enforcement to bring offenders to justice. The sentence serves as a warning to those who engage in similar predatory behavior, reinforcing the commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals within society.
