Boeing Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Catches Fire

A Boeing passenger plane operated by Condor Airlines was compelled to make an emergency landing after its engine reportedly caught fire shortly after takeoff. The aircraft, which was en route from Corfu to Düsseldorf, departed at approximately 20:29 local time on August 16, 2025.
Shortly after takeoff, passengers aboard Flight DE 3665 observed flames erupting from the right wing. One passenger recounted to Bild, “Suddenly, the power went out for a few seconds, and we realised we were no longer climbing.” Another passenger described the experience as “incredibly horrible,” stating, “I already sent goodbye texts because I thought, ‘It’s over now.’”
As the aircraft climbed to an altitude of 36,000 feet, cabin crew detected a disruption in airflow to the right engine. In response, the pilots decided to shut down the affected engine. After approximately 40 minutes in the air, the aircraft diverted to Brindisi, in southern Italy, for an emergency landing.
Passengers and the eight crew members were safely evacuated upon landing around 20:15. Following the incident, they were either accommodated in a hotel or remained at the airport terminal overnight. A replacement aircraft was dispatched to transport them to Germany the following morning at 10:30.
Condor Airlines confirmed that all individuals on board were safe and that there was never a direct threat to their well-being. A spokesperson explained that the bright orange flashes observed were due to a chemical reaction occurring within the combustion chamber, triggered by a disturbance in the engine’s airflow.
“The reason was a parameter indication outside the normal range caused by a disturbance in the air flow supply to the engine,” the spokesperson stated. “Due to the fault message, it was precautionarily decided to divert to Brindisi.”
The airline expressed its apologies for any inconvenience caused, reiterating that the safety of passengers and crew is always its top priority.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with air travel, even as safety protocols and technology continue to evolve.
