According to a study, the biblical accounts of the “Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes” and the “Miraculous Catch of Fish” could be explained by natural phenomena that occurred in the Sea of Galilee, known today as Lake Kinneret in Israel.

The Gospel of Matthew recounts how Jesus fed approximately 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. Yael Amitai, a physical limnologist at the Kinneret Laboratory, explained that the Sea of Galilee is a stratified lake, consisting of layers of water with varying temperatures and oxygen levels. The upper layer is warm and oxygen-rich, while the lower layer is cold and often lacks oxygen.

When strong westerly winds occur, they push the upper layer of water from the west to the east, creating pressure on the existing water. As a result, water from the lower layer rises, leading to fluctuations known as internal waves. These conditions can create a scenario in which fish may be asphyxiated and float to the surface, making them easy to gather.

The study highlights past fish die-offs in the lake, particularly one discovered in the Tzalmon estuary, where similar oxygen depletion events have been observed. According to climate researcher Ehud Strobach from the Volcani Institute, simulations based on the lake’s monitoring data show that internal waves and upwelling of cold, oxygen-poor water likely contributed to these die-offs, aligning with the timing of the biblical events.

The estimated timing of these miracles likely falls between late spring and early summer, a period marked by rapid temperature changes in the lake. Such shifts would facilitate the rise of dead fish to the surface, potentially supporting the biblical narratives.
