Jersey’s Birth Rate Decline Sparks Urgent Calls for Action

Jersey’s declining birth rate has reached alarming levels, prompting urgent discussions about the island’s future. According to Deputy Sam Mézec, the Minister for Housing, this trend serves as a “ticking bomb” that poses significant challenges for the community. A report from the Policy Centre Jersey indicates that the number of births on the island fell by a striking 20% from 2021 to 2024, in stark contrast to a 5% decrease observed in England and Wales.

Data highlights an ongoing decline, revealing that the birth rate in the first half of 2025 was 4% lower than the same period in 2024. Mézec emphasized that the increasing difficulty in finding suitable homes is discouraging young families from having children in Jersey. He noted that several friends chose to leave the island to afford raising families elsewhere.

Housing and Economic Concerns

The lack of affordable housing is a significant factor contributing to the declining birth rate. Mézec remarked, “They just can’t find the kind of home they want to bring their children up in, a place with enough bedrooms, outdoor space, and over the last few decades that has become more and more unaffordable in Jersey.” He warned that without a sufficient working population, the island may face challenges in sustaining essential services and supporting both the young and elderly.

The need for proactive policies is critical, according to Mézec. He stated, “We need to be planning now for policies that start to reverse that trend, and that means supporting younger people into family-sized homes.” The implications of this demographic shift could be severe, affecting the workforce and the services available to the community.

Mark Boleat, a senior advisor at the Policy Centre Jersey, echoed these concerns, highlighting that the local birth rate’s rapid decline is more pronounced than in larger regions. “In a big country, it can fall but it doesn’t have quite the effect. In Jersey, the fall… over the last few years is already having a very significant effect,” he explained. His report also noted a 10% decrease in the number of babies born in Jersey in 2024, along with a 5.6% drop in primary school pupils over the preceding two years.

Public Sentiment and Future Implications

Residents have voiced their concerns about the rising cost of living, which they believe is hindering their ability to raise children. Bobby Yordanov, a 33-year-old father, shared, “I love Jersey, but most likely if we have another child we are going to move because it’s going to be unbearable.” He attributed the low birth rate primarily to financial pressures, stating, “The cost of raising children here is one of the main reasons the birth rate is so low.”

Abdul Bassit, a father of two, noted that the escalating costs of clothing and food are significant burdens. “These costs are increasing every day,” he said, underscoring the financial strain families face.

In contrast, environmentalist Nigel Jones offered a different perspective on the declining birth rate. He argued that a lower birth rate is not necessarily detrimental. “The more educated young women are, the fewer children they are likely to have, and I don’t see that as a problem at all,” he stated. Jones contended that the world is not facing a shortage of children and suggested that Jersey could attract workers from elsewhere to fill future gaps in the workforce.
