Treasure Hunt Restarts for Hitler’s Gold Train in Poland

A significant development has emerged in the search for Hitler’s gold train, thought to contain precious jewels, gold, and the legendary £250 million Amber Room. Since the end of World War II in 1945, numerous efforts by governments, the Polish Army, and treasure hunters have been made to locate this fabled treasure. Recent findings suggest the train may be buried in northern Poland, specifically in the Kościerzyna district.
Polish authorities have officially granted permission for a new search in the area. The Gdańsk office for the Protection of Monuments has approved drilling and archaeological surveys in Dziemiany. The objective is to locate a suspected bunker from World War II, which could potentially house the elusive train and its valuable artefacts. Marcin Tymiński, a spokesperson for the Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, indicated that there may be a hidden German deposit in the region.
According to Tymiński, “Some speculate it could even be the lost Amber Room.” The Nazis established a military training ground in Dziemiany for SS units in late 1943, providing historical context for the ongoing treasure hunt led by Jan Delingowski, a former merchant fleet radio officer. Delingowski has dedicated the last decade to searching for the train in the region known as Kashubia. During a recent interview on the YouTube channel History Hiking, he discussed potential connections between the treasure site and Nazi official Erich Koch.
Erich Koch served as a Gauleiter for the Nazis in East Prussia from 1928 until the end of the war in 1945. Following World War II, Koch was tried in Poland and convicted in 1959 for war crimes, including the deaths of approximately 400,000 Poles. Although he was sentenced to death, the sentence was reportedly never carried out due to his poor health. Declassified documents from Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance suggest that the communist-era Polish Security Service and the Soviet KGB may have hoped Koch would reveal the location of the gold train.
Delingowski notes that a former inmate who met Koch in the 1980s claimed the Nazi official disclosed the treasure’s hiding place before his death. According to this account, the convoy transporting the treasure veered off the road “somewhere between Czersk and Człuchów, heading toward the Oder.”
The search for the Nazi gold train has persisted for decades, drawing interest from various treasure hunters and historians. The crates are believed to be hidden in a bunker, camouflaged on a hill near a lake, which possibly served as a site for former SS barracks. Previous explorations of the area uncovered a brick tank, further fueling speculation about the presence of valuable artefacts.
The official decision to conduct the search states, “Based on findings from prior heritage surveys, there is reason to believe that a World War II-era slit bunker is located on the plot, which may qualify as a historical monument. Furthermore, historic material, including archaeological artefacts, may be present inside and around it.”
The legend of the Nazi gold train, often referred to as the Wałbrzych gold train, maintains a captivating allure. It is said to be laden with precious jewels, gold, and the Amber Room, originally created for Russian Tsar Peter the Great in the 1700s. The Amber Room, often hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” was looted by the Nazis during their invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.
Despite numerous searches since 1945, including operations by the Polish Army during the Cold War, no trace of the train has been found. Interest surged between 2015 and 2018, when two Polish treasure hunters claimed to have discovered the train using ground-penetrating radar. However, this claim led to a high-profile excavation that was ultimately abandoned after it turned out the supposed anomaly was merely a natural geological formation.
As the search continues, the legend persists, inspiring enthusiasts to even construct a full-scale replica of a Nazi armoured train. The quest for the treasures hidden beneath Poland’s landscapes remains a tantalising mystery, with hopes that the latest efforts may finally uncover the secrets of the lost loot.
