Tourist Risks Baby’s Safety for Photo at Iguazu Falls
A tourist’s reckless behaviour has sparked outrage after he lifted a baby over a safety barrier at the world-famous Iguazu Falls in Argentina. The alarming incident occurred at the ‘Devil’s Throat’ viewpoint on February 17, 2024, where the drop reaches approximately 262 feet, comparable to the height of St. Paul’s Cathedral dome. Eyewitnesses expressed disbelief as the man appeared to endanger the child’s life for a photograph.
Witnesses reported seeing the male tourist lift the infant over the metal railing meant to ensure visitor safety. While he positioned the baby for the photo, a woman appeared to take pictures, seemingly unaware of the potential consequences. The scene was captured by other tourists, who later shared their concerns on social media.
The viewing platform at Garganta del Diablo is equipped with safety measures, including a railing and multiple warning signs advising visitors against leaning or climbing over the barriers. The company responsible for the platform has emphasized that, despite the implementation of safety protocols, individual responsibility remains crucial. Tourists who violate these rules may face penalties, including potential bans from the area.
According to a report by Diario Epoca, an eyewitness described the incident as “sending your child to the bottom of the Devil’s Throat for a photo.” The alarming behaviour recalls previous incidents at the same location, including a case last month where a tourist climbed over the railing to retrieve a hat, narrowly avoiding danger.
Visitor attractions globally have witnessed tragic accidents involving tourists falling from heights. In August 2024, gymnast Natalie Stichova, 23, tragically died after falling from a 262-foot mountain while attempting to take a picture near Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. Such incidents highlight the critical importance of adhering to safety guidelines while enjoying natural wonders.
The recent event at Iguazu Falls raises questions about tourist behaviour and the necessity for stricter enforcement of safety measures. As authorities consider the implications of this incident, the focus remains on promoting responsible tourism and ensuring the well-being of all visitors.
