Livestock Numbers Surge in Montenegro: Key Insights from 2025

Recent data from Montenegro’s statistical office, Monstat, reveals a significant increase in livestock numbers as of December 1, 2025, compared to the previous year. The total number of cattle has risen by 1.5 percent, reaching a count of 68,481. This includes a notable 2.1 percent increase in the population of dairy cows.

The sheep farming sector has experienced an impressive surge, with the total number of sheep growing by 8.2 percent from 2024. Interestingly, the number of goats has remained stable during this period. In a remarkable development, the overall pig population has jumped by 13.4 percent, bringing the total number to 33,179, as reported by Monstat.

Growth in Poultry and Milk Production

The poultry industry also saw substantial growth, with an increase of 14.2 percent in total poultry numbers last year. The most significant contribution came from laying hens, which numbered 1.03 million, reflecting a 1.3 percent increase compared to 2024.

Montenegro’s total milk production for the year was recorded at 163.6 million liters, with cow’s milk accounting for the lion’s share at 93.6 percent. On average, each cow produced 3.524 liters of milk. Additionally, the country produced 226 tons of wool and 234.03 million eggs during the same year.

Data for this research was collected between November 24 and December 20, 2025, using interviews and direct data entry via electronic devices. The survey focused on family farms and business entities, adhering to established criteria.

The sample included 3,574 agricultural households, ensuring a comprehensive overview of livestock and poultry production across the country. The findings highlight the resilience and growth potential of Montenegro’s agricultural sector, particularly in livestock farming.
