A woman has been convicted of wounding her neighbour during a violent altercation sparked by a noise complaint. Helen Tillcock, 42, attacked Sarah Hodges in the communal garden of their shared property in Gillingham on July 20, 2022. The assault left Hodges with severe injuries, including multiple stab wounds to her head, face, and upper body, which were described as “grave and life-threatening.”

The court heard that tensions had been building between the two women, who had been neighbours for approximately three years. Initially, their relationship was friendly, but it deteriorated over time. On the night of the stabbing, Hodges confronted Tillcock about loud banging noises in the early hours. This confrontation escalated into violence, leading to the stabbing.

During the trial at Maidstone Crown Court, Hodges testified that she was watching the film “Rocky” when the noise began. She described Tillcock’s arrival home as involving “slamming, banging, and kicking,” which prompted her to shout back. Following the altercation, Hodges lost consciousness and later discovered she had been stabbed.

Tillcock claimed she acted in self-defence, asserting that she was attacked first by Hodges. Despite her defence, the jury found her guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm but acquitted her of attempted murder. The judge, Catherine Moore, adjourned sentencing to consider Tillcock’s dangerousness and encouraged her to cooperate with the probation service for a comprehensive assessment.

As the court heard, the attack left Hodges needing urgent medical care at King’s College Hospital in London, where she received treatment for multiple injuries, including wounds to her scalp, temple, nose, and upper chest.

Following the incident, police discovered Tillcock hiding in a cupboard in an unoccupied basement flat. Body-worn camera footage, captured during her arrest, showed her with a black eye claiming she was the victim of an attack. Investigation revealed troubling messages she had sent to her landlord, expressing her frustrations with Hodges. In a message dated June 25, 2022, she wrote, “Sarah is a bloody nightmare at the moment. I want to kill her.”

The court also noted that in the days leading up to the stabbing, Tillcock had described Hodges in derogatory terms and threatened harm to her cat. The defence argued that the knife wounds were inflicted while Tillcock was being overpowered and punched by Hodges.

Tillcock has been remanded in custody and is set to be sentenced on April 27, 2024. The charge of wounding with intent carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, highlighting the serious nature of the crime and the implications of the court’s decision.
