Berkshire Pond Hockey Classic Returns to Beartown State Forest

The fourth annual Berkshire Pond Hockey Classic is set to take place on February 7, 2024, at Benedict Pond in Beartown State Forest. Running from 09:00 to 16:00, the event will feature 16 teams competing in an exciting four-on-four co-ed tournament. Should weather conditions prove unfavorable, the tournament will be postponed to February 14, 2024.

Event organizer Alex Regen highlighted the tournament’s growing popularity since its inception. “Hockey is very big in our region, and I think that people are always looking for fun things to do outdoors during the wintertime,” he stated. The picturesque setting of Beartown State Forest, surrounded by the Appalachian Trail, adds to the appeal. “It makes it a very beautiful location to play hockey,” Regen noted.

Returning for this year’s competition are 14 teams from the previous year, with a strong lineup of skilled players. Each rink measures 100 by 50 feet, which is smaller than a standard NHL rink. This unique size encourages strategic play, requiring teams to excel in puck movement and teamwork. “For a team to be good, they have to be good with their hands in order to get the puck with their stick,” Regen explained.

The tournament not only provides thrilling competition but also invites hockey enthusiasts to watch free of charge. Regen emphasized the local talent, stating, “We have some very good local competition in this community.” The event has become a cherished winter tradition, offering both participants and spectators an engaging way to enjoy the season.
