Nigerian Police Face Scrutiny Over Allegations Against IGP Officers

The Nigerian Police Force has not publicly addressed allegations of misconduct involving officers from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit. These allegations stem from petitions submitted by Lagos-based businessman Adeolu Oyinlola to several authorities, including the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Police Service Commission (PSC), and the Presidency.

Oyinlola’s complaints center on the handling of a previous petition related to a dispute with a former state governor. His latest petition, dated January 14, 2026, follows an earlier submission made on February 4, 2025, through his legal representatives, Emerald Attorney & Solicitors. In his initial petition, Oyinlola raised concerns about irregularities in the investigation of a vehicle transaction involving a Toyota Sequoia valued at approximately $150,000.

Frustrated with the police’s investigation, Oyinlola sought civil remedies and formally requested certified copies of the investigation file. He also expressed concerns about his personal safety, which he attributed to the ongoing dispute. In his subsequent petition, he claimed that the investigation by the IGP Monitoring Unit was compromised and that established police procedures were not adequately followed, particularly those regarding the handling of confidential information.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful, as messages sent to him had not received a reply by the time of this report. Nonetheless, a source within the Police Service Commission indicated that the PSC has completed its review of Oyinlola’s petitions and has forwarded its findings to the Inspector-General of Police for necessary action. The source noted that the PSC is awaiting a response from the IGP.

The situation has garnered public interest, especially as Oyinlola continues to advocate for institutional accountability and transparency within the police system. It remains uncertain whether the Presidency has taken any action regarding the petition addressed to it. Despite the lack of communication from these authorities, Oyinlola remains hopeful that the relevant institutions will fulfill their responsibilities in addressing the issues he has raised.
