Manx Care Addresses Maternity Leave Pay Errors with Backpay
Manx Care has taken steps to rectify a payment error that affected some staff during maternity leave, issuing backdated payments to those impacted. The healthcare provider identified a discrepancy between its internal terms and conditions and how enhancement pay was applied during maternity leave periods. This misalignment led to incorrect calculations for some employees.
In a formal statement, Manx Care acknowledged the issue, stating, “Manx Care has identified a misalignment between our terms and conditions and standing instructions which affected the application of enhancement pay during maternity leave.” Although not all staff were affected, the organization confirmed that numerous employees have already received backpay over the past two months as part of the correction process.
Ongoing Efforts to Address Underpayments
Manx Care emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all remaining affected staff are identified and compensated correctly. The organization reassured employees that no individual actions are necessary on their part. The issue first came to light last year through a member of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), which highlighted that maternity leave pay had been calculated based on basic salary instead of the average salary, as stipulated in the Manx Pay Terms and Conditions (MPTC).
The RCN pointed out that this miscalculation particularly impacted women who frequently worked unsocial hours, entitling them to additional enhancements. In a communication to its members, the RCN confirmed ongoing discussions with Manx Care and reported that an agreement has been reached. The message stated, “We now have agreement that all staff who have been on maternity leave since 01/07/2019 will receive back pay for their missed enhancements. It may take a while to sort the logistics, but it’s coming.”
Manx Care reiterated its dedication to addressing the remaining cases to ensure all affected staff receive the payments they are owed. The organization added, “While the issue does not affect all staff, a number of colleagues have already received backpay over the past two months as part of the correction process. Work is ongoing to ensure that all remaining affected staff are addressed.”
This proactive approach from Manx Care reflects a commitment to rectify the situation and support employees during a critical time in their lives. As the healthcare provider continues its efforts to resolve these issues, affected staff can expect to receive the compensation they are entitled to in the coming months.
