The city of Cetinje has recognized significant contributions to Montenegrin culture and identity by awarding the prestigious Ivan Crnojević Charter to the Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature for 2025. This announcement was made during a ceremony held at the Government House, emphasizing the faculty’s crucial role in preserving the Montenegrin language and cultural heritage.

At the same event, the charter for 2024 was presented to Docent Dr. Mihailo Vukmirović, whose award was postponed last year due to a tragic incident that impacted the community. The awards were presented by Nikola Đurašković, the Mayor of Cetinje, who highlighted the historical significance of the city in maintaining Montenegrin statehood and identity.

“This year marks 20 years since the restoration of Montenegro’s independence,” said Đurašković. He expressed pride in this milestone, framing it as a testament to the enduring aspirations of the Montenegrin people for freedom and sovereignty. The mayor noted that the restoration of independence in 2006 was a modern expression of determination, echoing the legacy of Ivan Crnojević, the founder of Cetinje.

In his remarks about Vukmirović, Đurašković praised the doctor’s commitment to the highest ideals of the medical profession, stating, “His work transcends mere occupation; it embodies a way of life and a pledge of humanity that knows no boundaries.” Vukmirović has gained recognition beyond Montenegro through extensive training at renowned European medical centers, later pioneering groundbreaking procedures in cardiology, including the successful implantation of the world’s smallest pacemaker.

Upon receiving his award, Vukmirović expressed gratitude, stating that the recognition is both an honor and a responsibility. He emphasized a deep connection to Cetinje, the city that has profoundly shaped his life and career. “This award is not only a personal honor but also an obligation to continue the path of compassion and excellence,” he remarked. He encouraged young creators to pursue their dreams courageously, believing in the power of knowledge and creativity.

The Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature was represented by Professor Boban Batrićević, who accepted the award on behalf of the institution. He thanked all who have supported the faculty since its inception. “It is encouraging that the city of Cetinje has recognized our efforts during these challenging times for our country and nation,” Batrićević stated.

He further underscored the faculty’s resilience amid social and political upheavals, noting that its professors and researchers steadfastly defend the fundamental values of Montenegrin statehood. “By awarding the charter named after Cetinje’s founder, the city acknowledges an institution that consistently upholds the values of free thought, cultural awareness, and perseverance in preserving the identity that underpins Montenegrin statehood,” Batrićević added.

This ceremony not only celebrated individual achievements but also highlighted the ongoing commitment to cultural and intellectual advancement in Montenegro, fostering a legacy that future generations can build upon.
