Families Left Heartbroken as Restaurant Closes on Christmas Day
Hundreds of families were left devastated on Christmas Day when Miller and Carter restaurant in Hockley Heath, Solihull, abruptly closed its doors. Diners had eagerly anticipated a festive meal, each having paid over £100 for a traditional Christmas feast. Unfortunately, the closure, announced at 1.20 p.m. on December 25, resulted from an unexpected electrical failure affecting the restaurant’s extractor fan system.
The situation unfolded as families arrived for their reserved meals, only to find the establishment unable to serve them. Normally, the Christmas Day set menu costs £105 per person, and many had made arrangements well in advance to avoid the hassle of cooking. A source confirmed to the Mirror that “hundreds” of diners were looking forward to the occasion.
Last-Minute Cancellation Leaves Families in Disarray
The management team of Miller and Carter posted an announcement on social media, explaining the sudden closure due to the malfunctioning extractor fan. They expressed regret, stating, “There is no easy way to say this but Miller and Carter Hockley Heath has had to close our doors today due to an unexpected electrical issue in our kitchen.” The statement further noted that engineers were contacted but could not rectify the problem in time.
One customer, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared their frustration, noting the high number of reservations that had been made. “This is disastrous. Hundreds have booked and paid £105 per head for dinner. Now they will have no food for their own Christmas dinner and have had their plans scuppered,” they remarked.
James Munro, who had planned a gathering for himself and twelve family members, was particularly affected. He had organized the meal to celebrate with his sister, who had traveled from Devon. Mr. Munro said, “There were 13 of us, including my sister’s family. We heard the news about half an hour before our booking.” He expressed disbelief at the last-minute communication and lamented the lack of alternative solutions offered by the restaurant.
Community Reactions and Calls for Accountability
While some patrons expressed understanding of the situation, others were less forgiving. Diners took to Miller and Carter’s social media page, suggesting that the restaurant could have provided customers with food to take home. One commenter noted, “Could they have not just given all the food to the booked customers to take home and cook?”
Despite the chaos, some individuals empathized with the restaurant’s predicament. A user commented, “We were booked for Christmas lunch today, but these things happen occasionally.” Nevertheless, the overwhelming sentiment was one of disappointment and frustration.
The Daily Mirror has reached out to Miller and Carter Hockley Heath and to Mitchells and Butlers, the parent company, for further comments on this incident. As families reflect on their disrupted Christmas celebrations, the hope remains that the establishment will learn from this experience and improve communication and contingency plans for the future.
