The first edition of the International Festival of Directing, named after the renowned director Jagoš Marković, commenced on December 1, 2023, at the Cultural Centre Budo Tomović in Montenegro. Despite the festival’s artistic intentions, the opening ceremony was met with vocal discontent from the audience, who greeted the speech by Tamara Vujović, Minister of Culture and Media, with boos and whistles.

The public’s reaction extended to various officials attending the event, including Jakov Milatović, the Vice President, Saša Mujović, the Mayor, Jelena Borovinić Bojović, President of the Assembly of the Capital City, and Deputy Mayor Nađa Ljiljanić. The negative reception overshadowed the festival’s opening, which features six productions from Montenegro and the region, showcasing the work of one of the most significant directors in the area.

The festival will run until December 6, 2023, and aims to celebrate diverse theatrical works. The opening night highlighted the performance of “Ćelava pjevačica” (The Bald Soprano), the last production directed by Jagoš Marković, produced by the Centre for Culture Tivat.

As the festival unfolds, the contrast between its artistic aspirations and the public’s discontent raises questions about the relationship between government officials and cultural events in Montenegro. This year’s festival not only marks a significant gathering for theatre enthusiasts but also serves as a platform for public expression and sentiment regarding cultural leadership.

The festival’s rapid ticket sales indicate a robust interest in the arts, despite the discord marked by the opening night. As attendees reflect on the performances and the broader cultural context, the International Festival of Directing stands to engage both audiences and officials in a critical dialogue about the future of the arts in the region.
