Maryna Mirzaeva, a motivational speaker in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, recently survived a deadly attack when her military jeep was targeted by a Russian drone. This incident, which occurred near the frontline city of Avdiivka, underscores the perilous conditions faced by those serving in Ukraine’s ongoing conflict. Mirzaeva, who has been a part of the armed forces since the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, exemplifies the resilience and determination of Ukraine’s female warriors.

In her unique role, Mirzaeva often addresses audiences amidst the sounds of artillery and drone strikes, delivering inspiring messages while facing extreme winter conditions. She describes herself as “not a warrior by profession, but a warrior by spirit.” Her experiences in the conflict have been marked by numerous close calls, but none have been as harrowing as the recent attack that resulted in injuries to her and the death of her colleague, who went by the call-sign Africa.

In recounting the attack, Mirzaeva shared, “We were targeted by a Russian FPV [First Person View] drone. He was killed and I survived.” Following the blast, she suffered severe injuries, including burns and cuts that required a week-long hospital stay. Despite her injuries, her commitment to her comrades and mission remained unwavering. “They had wanted me to stay in hospital for up to a month, but I left the hospital in Kharkiv after a week because I couldn’t stay away from my guys,” she explained.

Mirzaeva’s journey into military service began as a response to the imminent threat posed by Russian forces. Initially engaged in multiple part-time roles, including teaching and working for a non-governmental organization, she made the decision to join the armed forces after ensuring her family’s safety. By the summer of 2022, she had joined the 3rd Assault Brigade, where her role shifted from potential combat to motivating her fellow soldiers.

Her work now involves speaking to troops on the frontline, providing encouragement and documenting their stories for a forthcoming book titled Women of Freedom. Mirzaeva remarked on the changes in morale among soldiers, stating, “In 2022, everyone was eager to defend their country but now, after three and a half years of war, it is harder.” She aims to uplift spirits during a challenging period, balancing her time between various units and frontline locations.

Women play a crucial role in the Ukrainian military, with approximately 70,000 currently serving, making up about 7% of the total forces. While men comprise the majority of combat soldiers, women contribute significantly in both combat and support roles. Iryna Nykorak, a Ukrainian MP and founder of Arm Women Now, has been advocating for improved conditions and recognition of women in the military. She is also the author of Strong Women of the Strong Country, which highlights the stories of women, including Mirzaeva, who have bravely defended their homeland.

Mirzaeva attributes the strength of Ukrainian women to a long-standing cultural tradition of equality and resilience. “Historically, women in Ukraine have been treated with equality. They have grown up over the generations, willing to take all measures to defend their country and their loved ones,” she stated.

As the war continues, Mirzaeva remains hopeful for Ukraine’s future. She aspires to complete her PhD in history and pursue a writing career once the conflict subsides, envisioning a peaceful life characterized by love and family. Her military call-sign, Mamaika, reflects her strength and commitment. The name stems from a legendary Cossack hero, symbolizing courage and freedom.

In conclusion, Mirzaeva’s story is emblematic of the broader struggle faced by countless individuals in Ukraine. Her dedication to her country and her fellow soldiers not only highlights the unique contributions of women in the military but also underscores the enduring spirit of a nation at war.
