Anti-Migration Group in Scotland Tied to Controversial Figures

An anti-migration group planning protests in Elgin and Inverness has been linked to individuals associated with extremist views, including an alleged holocaust denier and a convicted abuser. Peterhead United, which denies any affiliation with far-right ideology, is set to hold a “political demonstration” at the Plainstones in Elgin on December 2, 2023, and another rally in Inverness on December 6, 2023.

The group’s promotional materials suggest that the demonstrations are intended to “protect” women and children while opposing net zero and digital ID policies. In response, the Moray Trades Union Council (MTUC) has condemned the group for its connections to figures espousing “extreme racist and antisemitic views.” This organization plans to host a concurrent “positive” event aimed at fostering community cohesion.

Claims of extremist affiliations have surfaced following a review of speeches and social media activity by Peterhead United and its leader, Steven Rennie. Investigations reveal that Rennie has participated in podcasts hosted by known extremists and has shared platforms with individuals making inflammatory statements about race and migration.

Controversial Connections and Statements

Rennie appeared on a podcast by Alistair McConnachie, who is noted for his controversial remarks regarding the Holocaust. In the past, McConnachie was expelled from the UK Independence Party (UKIP) for denying the existence of gas chambers at Auschwitz. He has since distanced himself from the label of holocaust denier, asserting that he acknowledges the murder of millions of Jews.

Additionally, social media postings by Rennie have drawn scrutiny, particularly a misleading statement following the Huntingdon train attack, where he suggested that the suspects were illegal immigrants. Police later confirmed that both individuals involved were British nationals. Such claims have raised alarms among local politicians, who argue that the group utilizes disinformation to promote divisive views.

During a recent rally in Fraserburgh, Rennie appeared to endorse the concept of “white pride” and denounced counter-protesters as “absolute freaks” for their opposition to the group’s ideology. This rhetoric has led to broader concerns about the group’s messaging and its potential impact on community relations.

Local politicians have expressed significant concern regarding Peterhead United’s activities. Graham Leadbitter, the SNP MP for Moray, stated that the views promoted by the group do not reflect the beliefs of the majority of constituents. He emphasized the need to challenge the group’s rhetoric, which he described as “distorting reality for their extremist ends.”

Similarly, Ariane Burgess, Green MSP for the Highlands and Islands, condemned the presence of xenophobia and racism in the region, asserting that such sentiments are unequivocally rejected by the community. She affirmed the importance of standing up for the safety and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their background.

In light of the upcoming protests, the MTUC has reiterated its commitment to fostering positive dialogue and community engagement. A spokesperson for the council remarked, “We are absolutely not saying that everyone who disagrees with us is far right. What we are saying is that this particular group has some very concerning extremist links.”
