Lottery Funding Fuels Grant Lodge Transformation for Elgin Revival
Moray Council has secured a significant funding boost from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, marking a key milestone in the transformation of Elgin’s historic Grant Lodge. Designed by the famed Scottish architect Robert Adam and constructed between 1766 and 1790, the former library has remained closed since a fire in 2003. The newly acquired funding of £212,427 will propel the project into its development phase, part of the council’s broader Cultural Quarter initiative.
Funding Utilization and Future Prospects
The initial funds will be allocated toward various crucial tasks, including detailed architectural designs, structural surveys, and community engagement efforts. A comprehensive business case for the building’s future will also be developed. Completing this phase will enable Moray Council to apply for an additional £1.9 million in capital funding to further advance the project.
Claire English, project manager for Moray Council’s Cultural Quarter, expressed her enthusiasm about the funding, indicating it reflects national confidence in the Grant Lodge initiative. She stated, “This is brilliant news for the Grant Lodge transformation, and there is potential for a further £1.9 million to be unlocked.” English emphasized that this funding boost not only strengthens their current efforts but also enhances their prospects for securing additional financial resources.
Subject to planning approval and further investment, construction is anticipated to commence in early 2027. This timeline sets a clear path for the community to look forward to the reopening of Grant Lodge.
Vision for a Cultural Hub
The overarching vision for Grant Lodge involves blending restored historic rooms with thoughtfully designed contemporary extensions. These enhancements aim to create flexible, high-quality spaces that will serve various purposes, including a café/bar, gallery, exhibition areas, and retail spaces. The renovated Grant Lodge is expected to become a vibrant hub for heritage and tourism in Moray.
Plans are in place for the building to be operated by a charitable trust, ensuring its sustainability as a visitor attraction. Discussions are ongoing with partners and the Grant Lodge Trust regarding the operational model, which will also include private functions and events in designated areas of the building.
This transformative project not only aims to restore a significant cultural landmark but also to invigorate the local economy and community engagement in Elgin.
