Olivia Rodrigo Faces Government Backlash Over Song Usage
Pop star Olivia Rodrigo has found herself in a contentious exchange with the United States government after vocally opposing the use of her song “All American B*tch” in a controversial video by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The video, which promotes self-deportation for undocumented immigrants, sparked a fierce response from Rodrigo, who criticized the government for using her music without permission.
In a now-deleted Instagram comment, Rodrigo stated, “don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.” This blunt message not only showcased her strong political stance but also prompted a warning from a DHS spokesperson. The official response appeared to mock Rodrigo’s lyrics, suggesting that she should express gratitude to law enforcement rather than belittle their efforts.
Artistic Control and Political Disputes
The DHS spokesperson stated, “America is grateful all the time for our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe. We suggest Ms. Rodrigo thank them for their service, not belittle their sacrifice.” This remark referenced Rodrigo’s own lyrics from “All American B*tch,” highlighting the ongoing tension between artistic expression and government narratives.
This incident marks the latest clash between Rodrigo and the Trump administration regarding the use of her music. In a previous occurrence, the official Team Trump TikTok account featured her song “deja vu,” prompting Rodrigo to respond, “ew don’t use my sound ever again ty,” indicating her disapproval of the unauthorized use.
Rodrigo has consistently leveraged her platform to advocate for immigrants and criticize government policies. In the summer of 2024, she publicly condemned the increase in ICE raids in Los Angeles, emphasizing her connection to the diverse community in the city. In an Instagram Story, she expressed her outrage over the deportations, stating, “I’ve lived in LA my whole life and I’m deeply upset about these violent deportations of my neighbours under the current administration.”
Commitment to Activism
Beyond her musical contributions, Rodrigo has demonstrated her commitment to social issues through her charity, 4 good, which supports women and advocates for girls’ education and reproductive rights. In 2024, she donated $2 million raised from her tour to this foundation, further emphasizing her dedication to community upliftment.
Rodrigo has also shown support for various political figures, including Kamala Harris, during the 2024 election. The Vice President shared a photo of the two together to promote vaccination efforts, creatively referencing Rodrigo’s hit song by stating, “and I agree, vaccines—they’re ‘good 4 u.'”
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Olivia Rodrigo remains a potent voice for change, using her platform to advocate for issues close to her heart while navigating the complexities of artistic integrity and government engagement. Her ability to connect with a generation grappling with anxiety and societal challenges reinforces her role as a significant cultural figure in today’s discourse.
