Dog Trainer Warns Pet Owners About Crucial Breed Selection

A dog behaviourist from Derbyshire, Will Atherton, has issued a strong warning for prospective pet owners about the critical importance of choosing the right dog breed. In a recent TikTok video, he emphasized that overlooking this key decision could lead to regrettable consequences for families considering bringing a dog into their homes.
Atherton, who has extensive experience working with dogs exhibiting various behavioural issues, highlighted that selecting the appropriate breed is one of the most significant choices a potential dog owner will ever make. He stated, “Choosing the right breed for your dog is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.” His message resonated strongly, as he noted that while all dogs require training and leadership, the inherent traits of different breeds can substantially influence their behaviour.
Historically, dogs have been selectively bred for diverse functions, including hunting, herding, and companionship. This breeding has resulted in distinct behavioural traits among various breeds. Atherton cautioned against the oversimplification that behavioural problems are solely the owner’s responsibility. He believes such claims overlook the deep-rooted instincts that some breeds possess. He remarked, “It’s a huge disservice to the reality of dog ownership” to suggest that all behavioural issues stem from the owner’s actions.
In his discussion, Atherton referenced the differences between breeds, stating, “Whether it makes us feel uncomfortable to talk about or not, the reality is that a Pit Bull is more likely to want to do serious harm to another animal than a Labrador is, because of the way that we selectively bred them.” He clarified that while a Pit Bull can indeed be a wonderful pet, they necessitate a skilled and knowledgeable owner to ensure proper training and management.
Understanding Breeds and Their Traits
Another breed that Atherton has advised caution regarding is the Border Collie. Although he did not elaborate on his concerns in the current video, he previously noted in another TikTok post that Border Collies can exhibit “extreme behaviour problems” due to their strong herding instincts. These instincts can manifest in domestic settings, potentially leading to challenges for first-time dog owners.
Atherton emphasized the importance of self-awareness for those contemplating dog ownership. He encouraged potential pet owners to engage in honest conversations about their capabilities. “If you want to have a dog that you are happy with, make sure you are having honest conversations with yourself about whether you have the skill, knowledge, and experience to turn the breeds that you are interested in into a safe, reliable canine companion,” he advised.
The insights provided by Atherton serve as a reminder that responsible pet ownership begins long before bringing a dog home. By selecting a breed that aligns with one’s lifestyle and capabilities, prospective dog owners can foster a positive and fulfilling relationship with their future pets.
