Greenland’s PM Asserts Independence Amid EU Discussions

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made a significant statement on March 15, 2023, during his address to the European Parliament, confirming that Greenland is not pursuing membership in the European Union (EU) and is “definitely not seeking to be part” of the United States. This marks Nielsen’s first appearance before the European Parliament, where he emphasized the territory’s commitment to maintaining its autonomy while fostering closer ties with the EU.
Nielsen’s remarks came in response to questions about Greenland’s future relationship with larger nations, particularly following previous comments from former US President Donald Trump expressing interest in acquiring the territory. “Let me say this clear, we are not going to join another country,” Nielsen reiterated. Currently, Greenland operates as an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with a self-governing arrangement established in 2009.
Strengthening Ties with the EU
Greenland’s relationship with the EU has evolved over the years. The territory left the European Economic Community, a precursor to the EU, in 1985 after a referendum in 1982. Despite this, Greenland has maintained a cooperative partnership with the EU, which has recently intensified, including the opening of an EU office in the capital, Nuuk.
Nielsen highlighted the importance of enhancing cooperation across various sectors such as education, critical minerals, renewable energy, digitalization, and sustainable tourism. He noted that Greenland is home to 24 of the 34 critical minerals identified by the EU, which could play a vital role in the global market. “In 2023, the EU and Greenland agreed on a strategic partnership on sustainable raw materials value chains,” he stated. He stressed the urgency of action in light of current global security challenges, asserting that Greenland’s critical minerals could shift geopolitical dynamics.
Fisheries are also a crucial aspect of Greenland’s economy, which relies heavily on this industry. Since 1985, an agreement has allowed EU vessels to fish in Greenlandic waters in exchange for financial contributions and tariff-free access to the EU market for Greenlandic fishery products. While Nielsen considers the existing fisheries agreement “satisfactory,” he acknowledged the need for ongoing adjustments to support the growth of Greenland’s fishing industry.
Contentious Issues and Cultural Identity
Despite the positive aspects of EU relations, Nielsen raised concerns regarding certain EU policies. He urged Brussels to reconsider its ban on seal products, which he believes has adversely affected seal hunting practices integral to Inuit culture. He described seal hunting as “the lifeblood of our culture and our identity,” emphasizing the importance of this tradition to Greenland’s heritage.
In closing, Nielsen conveyed a message of mutual dependency, stating, “Greenland needs the European Union and the European Union needs Greenland.” This sentiment echoed the broader context of international relations, particularly following Trump’s controversial remarks about Greenland.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola supported Nielsen’s position, assuring that the EU values its partnership with Greenland. During a press conference, she reaffirmed that the EU approaches Greenland “not with demands or claims, but in the spirit of mutual respect and friendship.” Metsola highlighted the importance of ongoing European investments in Greenland, particularly in education and skills development.
As Greenland navigates its path forward, both leaders underscore the significance of building a partnership that respects Greenland’s autonomy while fostering collaboration in various sectors. The dialogue initiated in the European Parliament could shape the future of Greenland’s international relationships and its role within the broader context of global affairs.
