Prince William Reflects on Cancer’s Impact on Royal Family

The Prince of Wales, William, has candidly discussed the recent health challenges faced by the royal family, describing the situation as akin to having the “rug pulled from under your feet.” His comments come in light of the recent cancer diagnoses affecting both the Princess of Wales and King Charles III.
In an episode from Eugene Levy’s travel series, *The Reluctant Traveller*, William reflected on the royal family’s history of good health, noting that they had been a “very lucky family.” He highlighted the longevity of his grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and the late Duke of Edinburgh, who lived into their 90s, fostering a belief that serious illness was unlikely to strike them.
William stated, “We’ve been very lucky, we hadn’t had many illnesses in the family for a very long time.” He emphasized that this positive outlook may have contributed to a sense of invulnerability. “But I think, when you suddenly realise that the rug, if you will, can be pulled from under your feet quite quickly, it takes you into some pretty not great places,” he added.
In early 2024, significant health news emerged as the Princess of Wales publicly shared her own battle with cancer. In a video released in March, Kate revealed that she was receiving treatment, later confirming her remission in January after undergoing care at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea. She expressed her relief, stating, “It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery.”
King Charles III, meanwhile, is undergoing ongoing treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer. Despite his diagnosis, he has continued to fulfill his official duties both domestically and internationally.
During the episode featuring Levy, William invited the actor to Windsor Castle, offering a glimpse into royal life. The pair shared a walk with William’s dog and concluded their visit with a pint at a local pub. Levy was taken aback when William arrived on an electric scooter. “I have a very low threshold for adventure,” Levy noted. To this, William responded, “It gets around quite nicely around here, it’s quite fun.”
The candid discussions from the Prince of Wales come at a time when health issues have become a significant concern for the royal family, highlighting the emotional toll that such diagnoses can have, even on those often seen as impervious to life’s challenges.
