Kano Youths Support Police Commissioner Amid Political Tensions

Hundreds of youths in Kano staged a protest on March 15, 2024, supporting Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori. The demonstration followed allegations that Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf was leveraging security issues for political gain, potentially undermining police effectiveness in the state. The protestors expressed concerns that the governor’s demands could destabilize security in Kano.
The rally was sparked by a press conference in which Governor Yusuf called for the removal of Commissioner Bakori, accusing him of humiliating the governor during the recent Independence Day celebrations. The youth carried placards with messages such as “CP Kano must stay,” “Kano People Love CP,” and “Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Leave CP alone,” emphasizing their support for the police chief.
Calls for Investigation into Police Withdrawal
In addition to the youth rally, a coalition of civil society groups known as Kano Agenda has demanded an immediate investigation into the police withdrawal during the Independence Day event. This withdrawal occurred just thirty minutes before the celebration, raising concerns about the motives behind it.
Speaking at a press conference on the same day, Comrade Abbas Yakasai, the leader of Kano Agenda, stated that Independence Day should serve as a unifying occasion for the nation, rather than a platform for political division. “This withdrawal, announced under unclear and suspicious directives, was not just a logistical setback; it was an affront to the spirit of independence itself,” he remarked.
Governor Yusuf has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove Commissioner Bakori from his position in response to the latter’s absence at the parade. Critics argue that the governor’s actions could be seen as politically motivated, undermining the authority of law enforcement in Kano.
The ongoing tensions between the Kano State government and the police force have led to calls for accountability and transparency. As the situation develops, the implications for security and governance in Kano remain to be seen, with both supporters and detractors of Commissioner Bakori voicing their concerns.
This unfolding political landscape highlights the complex relationship between state authorities and law enforcement, raising questions about the future of security management in Kano.
