Passengers in the UK are facing significant travel disruptions following a train derailment near Selhurst Depot on February 4, 2024. The incident prompted three major rail operators—Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express—to issue a “do not travel” warning, citing extensive delays across their services.

The derailment occurred early in the morning and has blocked train lines toward Norwood Junction and London Bridge. In response, special teams from Network Rail are on-site to investigate the incident. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries.

Details of the Incident and Service Disruptions

In a message posted on social media platform X, Network Rail Kent and Sussex confirmed their ongoing response to the situation. “We’re responding to a suspected derailment involving a train near Selhurst Depot, which is blocking the lines towards Norwood Junction and London Bridge. This is causing disruption to services in the area. There are no confirmed injuries at this time,” they stated. The organization assured the public that specialist staff are supporting the response as investigations continue.

Following the derailment, train services were significantly affected, with some passengers experiencing delays of up to 60 minutes. Southern urged travelers to consider alternate routes and to postpone their journeys if possible. They advised, “If you are travelling on our network today, your journey may be delayed, and you may need to use an alternative route to reach your destination. Please check your train before travelling and allow an additional 60 minutes for your journey.”

Impact on Train Services and Commuter Advice

In addition to the derailment, a signalling fault has further complicated the situation, resulting in fewer rail lines being available between Norwood Junction and London Blackfriars. As a result, trains running on the remaining lines must travel at reduced speeds, leading to additional service suspensions.

Routes impacted include services between London Bridge and East Grinstead, Orpington and Luton, as well as Brighton and Cambridge. Other affected trains, such as those typically running between Welwyn Garden City and Sevenoaks, are now limited to operating between London Blackfriars and Sevenoaks.

Passengers traveling on routes between Rainham and Luton will find services only operating between Rainham and Dartford. Furthermore, trains that normally connect Horsham and Peterborough or Brighton and Bedford may now be rerouted via Selhurst instead of Norwood Junction.

As the situation evolves, both customers and rail operators remain alert for updates. For ongoing information, travelers are encouraged to monitor announcements from rail services and consider alternative travel arrangements where necessary.
