Trafford Centre Faces Traffic Chaos as Shoppers Trapped for Hours
Chaos erupted at the Trafford Centre on December 29, 2023, as numerous shoppers found themselves trapped in the car parks for over two hours. Reports indicated that extensive delays plagued the parking areas, with vehicles gridlocked and unable to exit. Frustrated customers turned to social media to express their discontent, sharing images and videos of the lengthy queues, which extended to the nearby M60 motorway’s junctions.
The retail centre acknowledged the situation, attributing the car park congestion to a combination of heavy footfall and a vehicle breakdown near Junction 9 of the M60. In a statement, the Trafford Centre confirmed they had been informing visitors that all car parks were full throughout the afternoon.
Response to the Situation
Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported significant tailbacks on the M60, particularly in the anti-clockwise lanes near Junction 10, where slow traffic persisted throughout the afternoon. This congestion backed up to Junction 15 at Swinton, compounding the difficulties faced by shoppers attempting to leave the Trafford Centre.
One shopper, Katrina Cliffe, detailed her experience, stating, “We have been trying to get out of the car park since 15:45, so it’s been over an hour. You just can’t get anywhere.” Cliffe described the environment as chaotic, with every lane gridlocked. She even took the initiative to assist in traffic management, directing other motorists away from the congested area outside John Lewis.
Social media posts echoed Cliffe’s sentiments, with several users expressing their frustrations about the situation. Comments included statements like, “Trafford Centre is absolutely vile, it’s hell trying to get out the car park,” and “Trapped at Trafford Centre. Not moved in 2 hours now trying to get out.”
Management and Future Measures
In response to the chaos, the Trafford Centre stated that their dedicated traffic management teams had been collaborating with Greater Manchester Police and local highways authorities. Officers were deployed in key areas to facilitate traffic flow and alleviate the situation.
The statement emphasized the centre’s commitment to managing high visitor volumes, particularly during peak shopping periods. “We appreciate our visitors’ patience while trying to get in and out of the car parks,” the Trafford Centre added.
As the holiday season continues, shoppers and management alike will be hopeful for smoother traffic conditions in the future, ensuring that the experience at the Trafford Centre remains enjoyable and accessible for all.
