Tourists Rescued After Amusement Ride Malfunction in Brazil
Thrill-seekers in Brazil experienced a harrowing situation when the Super Gyro Tower malfunctioned, leaving around 40 people stranded nearly 200 feet in the air. The incident occurred on January 30, 2024, at Parque Unipraias in Balneario Camboriu, a popular seaside city known for its attractions.
The panoramic tower ride, which had only opened three months earlier, came to an abrupt halt while carrying tourists and staff. According to witnesses, the ride began to descend slowly before abruptly stopping altogether. Andre de Oliveira Couto, an attorney who was on the ride with his family, described the experience as nerve-wracking. “We were up there for more than two hours. They were bringing people down by rope,” he recounted.
Video footage captured the chaos as rescue teams worked to secure ropes and safety gear to lower passengers down the side of the structure. Park employees communicated limited information to those stranded, explaining that the safety lock had been triggered due to a power outage. The park later confirmed that all passengers were safely evacuated through the emergency exit with support from trained safety teams.
Rescue Operations and Safety Precautions
Rescue efforts involved both rope descents and the use of a ladder truck, which arrived to expedite the evacuation process. As the situation unfolded, visitors expressed concern over the lengthy wait and the lack of clear updates. Fortunately, all individuals on the ride were successfully brought back to safety.
The Super Gyro Tower can accommodate up to 50 passengers per ride and operates approximately 300 trips daily, offering breathtaking views from nearly 300 meters (980 feet) above sea level. This incident has raised questions about safety protocols following recent amusement park malfunctions in other locations.
In May 2023, rescuers took twice as long to reach individuals trapped on the Star Tower at Casey’s Rides in the United States, highlighting the potential risks associated with amusement parks. Similarly, in 2022, 25 people were rescued from the Super Trooper ride at Skegness Pleasure Beach after it became suspended in the air.
Looking Ahead: Safety Measures and Maintenance
Following the incident, Parque Unipraias confirmed that the Super Gyro Tower would undergo thorough maintenance to ensure safety for future visitors. The park stated that all safety protocols were followed during the evacuation process and emphasized their commitment to passenger safety.
While incidents like these are rare, they serve as reminders of the importance of stringent safety measures at amusement parks. The experiences of those stranded on the Super Gyro Tower reflect the unpredictable nature of thrill rides, where excitement can quickly turn into fear.
As authorities investigate the causes behind the ride’s malfunction, tourists and amusement park operators alike will be watching closely for updates on safety improvements and operational protocols to prevent future occurrences.
