Small Plane Crashes into Vehicles During Emergency Landing in Georgia
A small plane crashed into three vehicles during an emergency landing in Gainesville, Georgia, on September 25, 2023, at approximately 12:10 PM. The single-engine aircraft, piloted by Thomas Rogers, encountered engine failure shortly after takeoff, resulting in a dramatic situation that could have had far more severe consequences.
According to the Gainesville Police Department (GPD), Rogers was forced to land on a busy road after realizing he could not return to the airport due to a loss of engine power. “We lost our engine taking off out of Gainesville and realized, tried to glide back, did everything by the book, but realized we weren’t gonna make it back with how far out we were, so we came down the road,” Rogers explained to local media.
In the process of attempting the emergency landing, the plane struck three vehicles, resulting in a fuel tank becoming dislodged and crashing into the rear of an SUV. GPD Captain Kevin Holbrook remarked on the situation, stating, “The fact that this plane came down, did not strike any power poles, any power lines, and only hit three vehicles is absolutely remarkable.” He added that emergency crews anticipated a far worse outcome given the volume of traffic typically on the road, noting, “This is typically a situation which we would see multiple fatalities.”
Witnesses described the impact as shocking. Jacob Hunt, who was at the scene, commented that the sound of the crash was akin to “a shriek” and “the scraping of the asphalt,” while another observer, Deanna Campbell, expressed her disbelief, exclaiming, “I just told my husband, I said, ‘That’s a plane! That’s a plane!’ It really scared us.”
Chilling audio obtained by WXIA revealed Rogers’ fear during the ordeal as he prepared for the worst, saying, “We’re not going to make it. Please tell my wife, Molly, I love her … and my parents. I love them so much.” Fortunately, both Rogers and a student pilot suffered only minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The incident highlights the inherent risks associated with aviation, particularly during takeoff and landing phases. While the outcome could have been catastrophic, the successful avoidance of further casualties underscores the importance of pilot training and emergency preparedness. The community in Gainesville is left to reflect on the day’s events, grateful that a potential tragedy was averted with no fatalities reported.
