Shakhtar Donetsk Coach Struggles with Eye Contact in Interview
Arda Turan, the head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk, experienced an awkward moment during a recent interview with club reporter Daria Bondar Savina. Following a successful 4-2 away victory against Besiktas in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, Turan appeared visibly uncomfortable as he spoke with the 24-year-old journalist. The interview highlighted his struggle to maintain eye contact, leading to speculation about his personal life and professional demeanor.
Turan, a former midfielder for Barcelona and the Turkish national team, took the helm at Shakhtar earlier this year. He is focused on returning the club to its former glory after a third-place finish in the Ukrainian Premier League last season, with Dynamo Kyiv clinching the title. Due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, Shakhtar now plays its home matches in Lviv, a city that has become a hub for their operations.
During the interview, Turan fidgeted and kept his hands in his pockets while responding to questions from Bondar Savina, who wore a striking black dress. Despite his apparent discomfort, Turan provided detailed answers to her inquiries. Observers interpreted his avoidance of eye contact as a sign of loyalty to his wife, Ashlihan Dogan Turan, whom he married in 2018 and with whom he has two children.
Turan’s conduct is not entirely new; he has been seen adopting a careful approach when interacting with female fans, often extending his arm behind them for photographs to avoid any physical contact. This behavior has sparked discussions about professionalism and personal boundaries in the sports world.
Interestingly, Daria Bondar Savina is married to Valeriy Bondar, a defender for Shakhtar who has four caps for Ukraine. She has previously stated that her relationship with her husband does not interfere with her reporting duties. In an interview with Fostylen, she expressed, “Absolutely not difficult, I feel no discomfort at all. Maybe because I can abstract and at work, I don’t perceive Valeriy as my husband, as strange as it may sound.”
She elaborated on their relationship, emphasizing that their collaborative work enhances their understanding of each other. “We are more than just husband and wife. It’s an indescribable feeling to be each other’s best friends, colleagues, and lovers,” she stated.
As Shakhtar prepares for the next stage of the Europa League, Turan’s focus remains on improving the team’s performance while navigating the challenges of his public life. The coach’s recent interview serves as a reminder of the complexities that can arise when personal and professional lives intersect in the high-stakes world of sports.
