At least seven people died and eleven others sustained injuries when an intercity bus collided with a stationary articulated lorry on a motorway in southern Turkey. The tragic incident occurred on Friday evening, approximately 55 miles (90 kilometers) west of Gaziantep.

The lorry had pulled over due to a burst tyre, as confirmed by the local governor’s office. The bus, travelling at high speed, crashed into the rear of the truck, resulting in significant damage that completely crushed the front right section of the bus. All fatalities were passengers aboard the bus.

Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, leading to the closure of the motorway in both directions. The driver of the lorry, who escaped unharmed, has been taken into custody for questioning regarding the circumstances of the crash. According to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, efforts are currently underway to identify the victims.

Photographs from the aftermath of the accident depict the mangled wreckage of the bus wedged beneath the lorry’s trailer, with debris strewn across the roadway. The incident has revived concerns about road safety in Turkey, where high speeds and inadequate vehicle maintenance frequently contribute to fatal accidents.

This latest tragedy follows a similar pile-up last year, which claimed ten lives, and coincides with recent deadly bus crashes in India, underscoring the dangers associated with long-distance travel. As the investigation continues, preliminary reports indicate that the bus driver may not have seen the stationary lorry in time to apply the brakes effectively.

Authorities are expected to release further details as they gather more evidence regarding the events that led to this devastating collision.
