Ryan Giggs Supports Kobbie Mainoo’s Future at Manchester United

Former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs has expressed his desire for young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to remain at the club as the transfer deadline approaches. The 20-year-old has been the subject of interest from various teams, including Napoli and Chelsea, but Giggs believes his development is best served by staying at Old Trafford.

Mainoo’s future became uncertain following the recent sacking of Ruben Amorim, which has placed Michael Carrick in charge of the team until the end of the season. Carrick faces immediate challenges, including an upcoming Manchester derby, with less than three weeks remaining to finalize his squad before the transfer window closes.

Despite interest from other clubs, Mainoo is expected to stay with Manchester United for the remainder of the season. Earlier in the term, he declined a loan opportunity, which indicates his commitment to the club. However, as he approaches the final year of his contract, discussions regarding an extension have stalled. Currently, he is one of the lowest-paid players in the squad, having signed his deal in February 2023.

Mainoo’s playing time has been limited this season, with only two starts in the 2025/26 campaign, both of which resulted in cup exits. Giggs acknowledges the challenges young players face at a club of United’s stature, particularly in midfield, where competition is fierce.

As a footballer, you want to play. But I would have more patience because he is only 20, and it is difficult to play centre midfield for Man United,” Giggs stated in an interview with BetSelect. He emphasized that while Mainoo should seek more playing time, he also needs to remain patient and seize opportunities when they arise.

Carrick has already indicated how he envisions utilizing Mainoo. In a conversation with former player Rio Ferdinand, Carrick described Mainoo as more of an attacking player rather than a holding midfielder. “I see him playing that little bit higher and creating,” Carrick noted. “I think he’s got a massive future. He just needs that patience and a little bit of a break again.”

As the situation develops, Mainoo’s path forward may involve competing for a spot alongside established players like Bruno Fernandes. If Carrick opts for a midfield pairing, it could allow both players to showcase their talents effectively.

Given the current dynamics at Manchester United, the coming weeks will be crucial for Mainoo’s career. His ability to adapt and make the most of limited opportunities may determine his future with the club as the transfer deadline looms.
