Police Closure of M50 After Driver Abandons Suspicious Vehicle

A significant traffic disruption occurred on the M50 motorway near Tewkesbury on February 21, 2024, when police responded to a suspicious vehicle linked to drug activity. The incident began around 17:40 GMT, prompting the closure of two lanes on the eastbound carriageway, affecting traffic flow between junction two towards the A417 at Ledbury and junction one toward the A38.

According to a statement from West Mercia Police, officers had tracked a vehicle on the motorway that had previously been associated with illegal substances. When the vehicle came to a stop, the driver abandoned it and fled the scene, necessitating the temporary closure of the road for safety reasons while police searched for the individual.

Despite extensive efforts, authorities were unable to locate the driver. The police have confirmed that investigations to identify the individual are ongoing. A spokesperson for West Mercia Police noted, “At around 16:45 GMT on Saturday afternoon, officers tracked a vehicle between junctions three and two on the M50 as it had previously been linked to drugs. The vehicle stopped on the M50 and the driver fled the scene.”

The disruption caused delays for motorists in the area, but no injuries were reported. The police have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as they continue their enquiries.
