Matthijs de Ligt Promises Manchester United Fans a Better Season

Matthijs de Ligt has pledged that Manchester United will work hard to deliver a successful season after a challenging 2024-25 campaign. The club finished the previous season without a trophy and in 15th place in the Premier League, marking their worst performance since being relegated in 1974. With ambitions for a top-six finish this season, United kicked off their pre-season tour in the United States with a promising 2-1 victory against West Ham United in New Jersey.

Addressing the Fans

Following last season’s disappointing results, De Ligt emphasized the need to repay the loyal supporters. “Of course, we owe it to them,” he stated, acknowledging the fans’ disappointment. “But I think, first of all, we owe it to ourselves. We are all unhappy with our performances last season.” He expressed hope that the team can bring more joy to the supporters in the upcoming season.

Head coach Ruben Amorim also acknowledged the fans’ frustrations, describing the last campaign as “disastrous.” He reminded supporters that Manchester United has a history of overcoming difficult situations, reinforcing the club’s resilience.

United’s pre-season preparations continue with upcoming matches against Bournemouth in Chicago on Wednesday and Everton in Atlanta next Sunday. The team will conclude their friendly fixtures against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on August 9.

Building Confidence

De Ligt noted that a win like the one against West Ham is crucial for rebuilding the team’s confidence. “I think after a season like that, it’s normal to have to build your confidence,” he explained. “Winning helps you believe more in what you’re doing.” The defender expressed optimism about the team’s potential, highlighting the positive atmosphere within the camp and the arrival of new players.

Reflecting on the absence of European football this season, De Ligt suggested that it could be beneficial if the team utilizes the time effectively. “If we train every day at maximum, we can make it our advantage,” he asserted, acknowledging that while playing in Europe is desirable, the focus should be on improving domestic performance.

De Ligt showcased his skills in a defensive trio alongside Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven during the match against West Ham. Amorim kept the starting eleven on the pitch for 65 minutes, and De Ligt was encouraged by their performance against a competitive side.

“We have to find a way to improve,” he stated, recognizing the team’s need for progress after last season. He pointed to recent signings, such as Matheus Cunha, as positive contributions to the squad.
