Mary Berry Reflects on Her Decision to Leave Bake Off

Mary Berry, the beloved former judge of The Great British Bake Off, has expressed that she does not regret her decision to leave the show in 2017. In a recent interview with Radio Times, she stated that she feels “very cherished by the BBC” and believes her choice to remain with the corporation was “quite right.”
In 2017, Berry announced her departure alongside original hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins when Channel 4 secured the rights to produce future seasons of the popular baking competition, outbidding the BBC, where the show first gained its fame. Following her exit, Berry continued to thrive in her television career, featuring in several BBC programs including Classic Mary Berry and Britain’s Best Home Cook, both launched in 2018. She has also hosted various specials such as Mary Berry’s Highland Christmas in 2023 and The Jubilee Pudding: 70 Years In The Baking in 2022.
Reflecting on her early days with the show, Berry recalled her initial audition and her desire for a co-judge who could balance her skills. “I said, ‘I do need someone with a second opinion, and I’m really not very good at bread. It’s not my forte,’” Berry shared. This led to the introduction of Paul Hollywood, whose style contrasted with hers significantly.
Berry emphasized her approach to judging contestants, aiming to provide constructive feedback without causing distress. “I don’t want tears,” she explained. “If something had collapsed in the middle, I’d say to a contestant, ‘Do you know what you could do with that? You could just scoop a little bit out, fill it with fruit and cream, and you’ve got a pudding.’”
Following Berry’s departure, Prue Leith took her place as a judge, while Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig succeeded Giedroyc and Perkins as hosts. Toksvig left the series in 2020, with Matt Lucas stepping in as her replacement. More recently, Alison Hammond joined the baking competition alongside Fielding.
This latest issue of Radio Times will be available on October 14, 2023. For further insights into the world of entertainment, readers can check the publication’s coverage or explore its TV and streaming guides.
