Manuel Akanji Joins Inter Milan on Loan with Purchase Option
Manuel Akanji has officially joined Inter Milan on loan from Manchester City, with the potential for a permanent transfer next summer. The Swiss defender’s move comes after he found himself sidelined at the Etihad Stadium, where he struggled for playing time at the start of the current season.
The loan agreement includes an option for Inter to secure Akanji’s services permanently for €15 million (approximately £13 million). This option will become an obligation if Inter Milan wins Serie A and Akanji participates in at least 50% of their league matches. Interest in Akanji had been high, with clubs such as Tottenham, AC Milan, and Galatasaray expressing their desire to acquire the player.
Akanji did not actively seek out a transfer; Manchester City was willing to retain him if a suitable offer did not materialize. However, the appeal of playing Champions League football in Milan ultimately swayed his decision. The move allows City to streamline their squad, aligning with manager Pep Guardiola’s preference for a smaller roster while also addressing the need to comply with Champions League registration rules.
Impact on Manchester City’s Squad
Akanji’s departure follows goalkeeper Ederson’s exit, which will bring City closer to their roster limit. City had too many non-homegrown players, necessitating adjustments. The arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma to replace Ederson means City will once again exceed their required roster size unless further adjustments are made.
In light of these changes, Ilkay Gundogan is expected to join Galatasaray, which could allow City to finalize their Champions League squad in preparation for their opening match against Napoli later this month. Additionally, with the arrival of Donnarumma, City may have to reconsider the status of Stefan Ortega, who is now projected to be the fourth-choice goalkeeper.
As Manchester City prepares for the upcoming season, Akanji’s loan to Inter Milan marks a notable shift for both the player and the club. City is expected to confirm their finalized Champions League squad this week, highlighting the ongoing evolution of their roster as they aim for success on multiple fronts this season.
