Manchester United Eyes Jean-Philippe Mateta Amid Striker Search

Manchester United’s pursuit of a new striker has intensified following the confirmation of Viktor Gyokeres’ transfer to Arsenal. The Swedish forward had been a potential target for United as the club looks to solidify its attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season. With just three weeks remaining before the season kicks off, United remains in search of a proven goalscorer to complement their recent signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Despite a strong showing under United head coach Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, Gyokeres will not be joining United, leaving the club to explore other avenues. Amorim has publicly stated he would be “happy” to begin the season without a new striker, but it is likely that internal discussions reflect a different sentiment. United’s recent expenditures of over £120 million on Cunha and Mbeumo have placed the club in a position where they need to generate funds through player sales to continue their recruitment efforts.
The absence of a successful striker acquisition could prove detrimental as United attempts to build a team capable of challenging for top honors. After missing out on Liam Delap last month, the search for a reliable forward has become increasingly urgent. Numerous names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, yet the club is still awaiting a breakthrough.
Identifying a striker with experience in the Premier League remains a key focus for United. Yet, proven talents typically come with a significant price tag. In light of this summer’s pressing need for a new striker, United may need to reconsider their budgetary constraints and make a decisive move.
One potential target is Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who enjoyed an impressive season in 2024/25. Mateta scored 17 goals across all competitions, playing a pivotal role in helping Palace secure the FA Cup. The 28-year-old was particularly effective in the Premier League, netting 14 league goals, including two against United at Old Trafford. His transition to the Premier League has been marked by steady improvement; since joining Palace from German club Mainz, he has tallied 46 goals in 152 matches.
Mateta’s ability to cause problems for defenders, both on the ground and in the air, makes him an appealing option for United. Following Palace’s decision to trigger a 12-month extension on his contract last December, the striker is now tied to the club until June 2027. This move has helped to safeguard his market value, particularly as Palace contemplates their options for the upcoming season.
While Crystal Palace is likely aware of the potential ramifications of losing their main striker, they may also recognize the urgency to secure a favorable transfer fee this summer. If Mateta’s contract remains unchanged over the next year, clubs could approach him for a reduced price when he enters the final year of his deal.
United’s recent signing strategy, which has brought in Cunha and Mbeumo, highlights the club’s continued appeal in the transfer market. Additionally, Palace’s drop from the Europa League to the Europa Conference League may influence Mateta’s decision-making process. Although acquiring Mateta could involve a significant financial outlay, the possibility of negotiating a deal may be more feasible given Palace’s current circumstances.
As the clock ticks down to the start of the new Premier League season, Manchester United’s search for a striker remains a priority. With their sights set on Mateta, the club hopes to find a player who can make an immediate impact and help bolster their attacking line-up.
