Man Discovers Long-Lost Playmobil Cone in Lung After 40 Years

A man from Preston, Lancashire, experienced an astonishing medical revelation when he discovered a childhood toy lodged in his lung for nearly four decades. Paul Baxter, a 57-year-old postal worker, had initially feared he was facing a serious health crisis due to symptoms that included persistent coughing and yellow phlegm.

After a year of feeling unwell, Baxter visited a breathing specialist who conducted a series of examinations, suspecting a tumor based on imaging results. The unexpected diagnosis emerged during a bronchoscopy in January 2023, revealing not a malignant growth, but a “long-lost Playmobil traffic cone” that Baxter had aspirated as a child.

Reflecting on the moment doctors extracted the cone, Baxter said, “Everyone just started laughing, the doctors, nurses, all of us. I find it absolutely hilarious.” The toy, given to him on his seventh birthday, had been unknowingly lodged in his lung since childhood. According to Baxter, he had assumed he was merely suffering from a common cold at the time of his doctor’s visit.

During the procedure, medical staff noted “something small and orange” at the base of his lung. The British Medical Journal later reported that Baxter recalled the Playmobil set, indicating he likely aspirated the cone soon after receiving it. While it is common for children to accidentally inhale small objects, the delayed onset of symptoms over such an extended period was deemed unusual.

Baxter’s medical team speculated that the object might have been absorbed into the lining of his lung, which could have contributed to the various respiratory issues he faced over the years. “This may be because aspiration occurred at such a young age that the patient’s airway was able to remodel and adapt to the presence of this foreign body,” they explained.

Four months following the removal of the miniature traffic cone, Baxter reported substantial improvement in his symptoms. “On a positive note, his symptoms improved markedly,” the doctors stated, humorously noting that he finally found his long-lost Playmobil traffic cone in the very last place he would look.

Baxter has since decided to keep the cone as a memento, now stored in a jar in his cupboard. He remarked, “I think I will keep it forever, pass it on to my grandchildren.” The remarkable story serves as a reminder of the body’s resilience and the unexpected complexities of human health.

In the past, Baxter had battled pneumonia and underwent an MRI scan in 2004 for a brain abscess, yet no one had identified the toy during those examinations. His experience highlights the importance of thorough medical investigations, particularly for patients with persistent or unexplained symptoms.
