Homeless Man Sentenced to Life for Murder of Good Samaritan
A 39-year-old homeless man, Apapale Adoum, has received a life sentence for the murder of Victoria Adams, a 37-year-old woman who had offered him shelter in her home. The incident occurred on February 9, 2024, at her residence in Hammersmith, west London. Adoum pleaded guilty to the charge at the Old Bailey in August and was remanded in custody until his sentencing.
During the hearing, Judge Nigel Lickley KC described the case as one of profound betrayal. He stated, “Victoria Adams was murdered in her own home. She had taken you in and offered you shelter.” The judge emphasized the brutality of Adoum’s actions, noting that he armed himself with a hammer before launching a “brutal and savage” attack when Ms. Adams asked him to leave her flat.
The judge imposed a minimum term of 21 years before Adoum may be considered for parole. In a victim impact statement read to the court, Ms. Adams’s aunt, Cathy Adams, expressed the family’s devastation, stating, “Vicky was very trusting, generous to a fault, caring and fun-loving. Vicky tried to repay the kindness she had been shown by others and she paid for this with her life.”
The details surrounding the murder reveal a tragic sequence of events. A post-mortem examination indicated that Ms. Adams suffered at least ten separate blows to the head. The murder weapon, a hammer, was found nearby, stained with her blood and DNA. Adoum and Ms. Adams had only met three days prior at a homeless shelter, where she had extended her kindness by offering him a place to stay. Following a brief period, she decided to write a note asking him to leave.
On the night of the incident, police were called to the flat on Coulter Road following reports of a man attempting to break in. Upon entering the property, officers discovered Ms. Adams face down in her bedroom, with a black bin bag over her head, covered by a pillow.
Residents in the area reacted with shock to the murder. Local resident Ellie Scot, 22, described the neighbourhood as peaceful, stating, “There’s never any trouble around here.” Many locals reported hearing “piercing screams” in the days leading up to the tragic discovery.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the timeline of events, stating, “On Sunday, 9 February at 22:13 hrs, police were called to a residential property in Coulter Road following reports that a man was attempting to force entry into one of the flats. Officers arrived and, having gained entry to the property, found a woman, aged 36, who had sadly died.”
This incident has deeply affected the community and highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by those who open their homes to help others in need. Ms. Adams’s family continues to grieve the loss of a woman they described as having her “whole life in front of her.”
