History Teacher Banned After Inappropriate Comments to Students
A history teacher has been banned from the profession for five years following inappropriate remarks made to students at Brunts Academy in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) found that Grant Nightingale, 35, engaged in serious misconduct, including sharing a so-called “top five sh*g list of teachers” during discussions with pupils.
The panel received evidence that Nightingale made several inappropriate comments regarding students’ personal lives. During classroom interactions, he expressed disappointment if students made “the wrong choices” regarding their relationships. He also controversially told a female student that “everything doesn’t have to be about sleeping with boys.” Such statements raised significant concerns regarding his professional boundaries.
In addition to these comments, Nightingale disclosed personal details about his own sexual experiences at a young age, including when he lost his virginity. His conduct included derogatory remarks, referring to one student’s former girlfriend as a “smackhead” and labeling another student’s ex-boyfriend as a “nonce.” Furthermore, he offered emotional support inappropriately, telling a pupil with relationship issues, “I would cuddle you if I could cuddle you.”
Nightingale’s conduct came to light after he exchanged messages with two students via the school’s email system in 2020. He later admitted that his behavior was unprofessional and acknowledged that he should not have participated in discussions like the one about the “top five sh*g list of teachers.”
The TRA panel noted that Nightingale demonstrated a “grossly insufficient awareness” of his role as a teacher, suggesting he acted more as a friend than an educator. Their report highlighted “serious and repeated breaches of safeguarding requirements,” emphasizing that he failed to maintain professional boundaries with pupils.
In total, the panel’s findings indicated multiple failures on Nightingale’s part, including not escalating safeguarding concerns when students expressed they “missed” or “loved” him. The TRA concluded that his lack of understanding regarding the teacher-student relationship remained unaddressed.
As a result of the findings, Nightingale was dismissed from Brunts Academy in October 2020, just over a year after beginning his tenure there in April 2019. The panel recommended a review of his case in five years, reflecting the serious nature of his misconduct and the need for safeguards in educational environments.
