German Man Discovers £13 Million Lottery Ticket After Six Months

A man from the Frankfurt area of Germany recently found a long-forgotten lottery ticket worth £13 million in his jacket pocket, a discovery that transformed his life overnight. The ticket, which he had left there for six months, turned out to be a winning ticket from the Lotto Hessen lottery, amounting to €15,336,286.40.

The father made this fortunate discovery as the weather turned cooler and he reached for a jacket he had not worn since March 2023. Upon finding the ticket, he decided to check the numbers, and to his astonishment, he learned he was the lucky winner. “When I checked the numbers on my phone and saw the winning amount, I was completely shocked – luckily I was sitting down, otherwise my knees would have given way,” he explained.

What makes this story even more remarkable is that the Lotto Hessen company had launched a campaign to locate the ticket holder after it remained unclaimed for two months. The winning ticket had been part of a promotional effort to encourage anyone who might have purchased it to come forward. The man admitted he had seen these appeals but did not consider that he could be the one they were looking for.

“I thought, ‘How stupid can you be not to collect it?'” he said, reflecting on the irony of his situation. He and his wife plan to use the majority of their winnings to secure their children’s future, while the first purchase on their list is a new living room sofa.

Lotto Hessen’s spokesman, Martin Blach, commented on the unusual circumstances of the win, stating, “Out of sight, out of mind – unbelievable, but that’s probably how it must have been.” The couple has decided to keep their newfound wealth private, opting not to share their good fortune with many others.

This incident is reminiscent of another lottery story from 2013, when a British couple, David and Susan Nelson, also became millionaires after forgetting to check their winning ticket for three weeks. They discovered their prize of £1 million only after seeing a public appeal for a missing EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle winner. David Nelson recalled, “I was absolutely shocked to see it was the winner. I woke up Susan to tell her the news. It’s fantastic.”

The serendipitous nature of these stories highlights the unexpected ways in which luck can change lives. For the father in Frankfurt, a simple act of wearing a jacket led to a life-altering discovery, proving that sometimes, fortune truly favors the forgetful.
