Forest of Dean Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Child Rape

A man from the Forest of Dean, identified as Matthew Alexander, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the repeated rape and sexual assault of two young girls. The offenses occurred several years ago when the victims were under the age of 13. The sentencing took place at Gloucester Crown Court following a trial that concluded in July 2023.
The investigation into Alexander’s actions began in July 2023, after the now-adult victims approached Gloucestershire Police to report the incidents. Despite Alexander’s denial of the charges, a jury found him guilty on all counts, which included 16 offences related to sexual assault and rape.
Before the sentencing, the court heard emotional statements from the victims, detailing the profound effects Alexander’s actions had on their lives. One victim expressed, “I felt that I had to grow up faster and I couldn’t be the child that I wanted to be… I have flashbacks of what happened, and I have to reassure myself that he is not there and that I am safe.” Another victim remarked on her struggles with relationships, stating, “I now find it hard to trust anyone to look after my child, especially men.”
During the sentencing, Recorder Crooknorth acknowledged the courage of the victims, stating, “You have tried to escape the truth and now it has caught up with you. You continued to deny the offences and there is no remorse.”
In addition to the 20-year prison term, Alexander received an extended sentence with an additional two years to serve on license due to aggravating factors. The judge also imposed a 30-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the victims. Alexander’s name will be added to the Sex Offenders’ Register for life. He must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
Detective Constable Smith from the Criminal Investigation Department remarked on the case, stating, “The impact of Alexander’s crimes on his victims has been significant and long-lasting. I commend them for having the courage to come forward and report his horrendous crimes.” The detective emphasized the commitment of the police to protect children from sexual abuse and urged other victims to come forward, regardless of when the offenses occurred.
Support for survivors of sexual violence is available through several resources. Those in need of assistance can contact specially trained officers, or organizations such as First Light, which offers support for all victims of sexual violence. In emergencies, individuals can call 999, or for non-emergencies, they should dial 101 or report online.
The sentencing of Matthew Alexander serves as a reminder of the importance of coming forward and the legal system’s role in addressing such serious crimes.
