Dwayne Johnson Celebrates Polynesian Culture in Emotional Dance

Dwayne Johnson, widely known as “The Rock,” shared a deeply emotional moment with his family during a performance of the sacred Samoan dance, the *Taualuga*, in Hawaii. The 53-year-old actor and former professional wrestler posted a heartfelt video on social media, showcasing the ceremonial dance alongside his mother, Ata Johnson, and his daughters, Simone, Jasmine, and Tiana.
In the video, Johnson removed his shirt to display his intricate Polynesian tattoo, symbolizing a connection to his heritage. As he struck the ground during the performance, he emphasized the significance of the moment, describing how the dance represents a deep respect for family and culture.
Celebrating Family and Heritage
In his Instagram post, Johnson expressed, “I was blessed to have this very special moment on stage with my mom, my daughters, and our aiga (family).” He elaborated on the tradition, noting, “It’s custom for Samoan men to take their shirts off to proudly show our Polynesian tatau (tattoo) and the intricate stories our ink tells.” He also highlighted the custom for Samoan women to reveal their beautiful *malu* tattoos, showcasing their own cultural significance.
Johnson’s emotional connection to the dance was palpable as he explained, “I’m slapping the ground as a way to show my respect for how significant this is and how SACRED our ground becomes in this moment with our elders, and my daughters dancing next to me.” He concluded, “It’s emotional. You can’t help but feel it. The mana.”
The actor reflected on the importance of such moments amidst a busy life, stating, “Life is busy for everyone—so special moments like this mean the world to me, to honour our family, our culture, and always so good coming back home to Hawaii.”
Representing Polynesian Culture
Earlier in 2023, Johnson expressed pride in representing Polynesian culture through his role as Maui in the Disney animated film *Moana*. He shared with E! News, “The thing about ‘Moana’—and I think the success about ‘Moana’—it’s just been this global embrace of our Polynesian culture, and it’s really cool.”
He also highlighted the film’s impact on young girls, saying, “Of everything that I love about *Moana*, the thing that I love most is my daughters see themselves in Moana.” Johnson emphasized the importance of empowering young women, stating, “I get to run around with my long hair as Maui, and go, ‘Cheehoo,’ and embolden our young girls—it’s awesome.”
Johnson’s dedication to his family and cultural heritage resonates throughout his work and personal life, making him a significant figure in promoting Polynesian culture on a global stage.
