Discover the Surprising History Behind Winter Hats’ Pom-Poms
As winter temperatures plunge, many people are turning to warm clothing, with winter hats featuring pom-poms becoming a common choice. While these fluffy embellishments may seem merely decorative today, their history reveals a much more functional and symbolic purpose that dates back centuries.
Historical Significance of Pom-Poms
The pom-pom’s origins can be traced back to the Viking era, where it was not just an accessory but a notable feature of apparel. The mythological god Freyr is often depicted wearing headgear adorned with pom-poms, as evidenced by a statuette discovered in Södermanland, Sweden, in 1904. In various European cultures, bobble hats served as indicators of rank, with clergymen in ancient Rome sporting caps known as birettas that featured different coloured pom-poms to denote their specific roles.
Similarly, military units, including soldiers from the Scottish Highland regiments and Napoleon’s infantry, incorporated woolly bobbles into their uniforms. These pom-poms not only added a unique flair but also served practical purposes, such as protecting against harsh weather conditions. According to The Outline, some experts assert that these embellishments offered essential protection in extreme climates, while others believe they indicated the regiment to which the soldiers belonged.
Pom-Poms in Maritime and Popular Culture
The use of pom-poms extended beyond the battlefield. Sailors donned pom-pom hats at sea, where the added fluff reportedly provided cushioning in tight spaces, protecting their heads from bumps.
The popularity of pom-poms surged during the Great Depression, a time when people sought inexpensive ways to enhance their wardrobes. The term “pom-pom” itself originates from the French word “pompon,” which refers to a small decorative ball made of fabric or feathers, a term that has been in use since the 18th century.
Cultural icons also played a significant role in popularising pom-poms. Michael Nesmith of The Monkees frequently wore these hats during television appearances, influencing fashion trends and encouraging viewers to adopt the style.
As winter approaches and temperatures drop, understanding the history behind these whimsical accessories can add a layer of appreciation to the humble pom-pom. Next time you reach for your winter hat, consider the centuries of tradition and practicality that come with it.
