Community Mourns Tragic Loss of Mikey Brown and Layla Douglas
A devastating car crash in Glenavy, Co Antrim, has claimed the lives of two young individuals, identified as Mikey Brown and Layla Douglas, both in their 20s. The collision occurred on November 22, 2023, at approximately 18:25 local time, involving a grey Skoda Fabia and a grey Cupra Formentor on Lurgan Road. Tragically, the occupants of the Cupra were pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Skoda was transported to hospital for treatment of injuries.
Emergency services, including the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), responded promptly to the incident. Eyewitness accounts and local reports reveal a community shaken by the loss. The crash has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with many expressing their condolences and sharing memories of the young victims.

The Townland Boxing Club, where Mikey Brown was a former member, paid tribute, stating, “We are truly devastated to hear of the tragic death of young Mikey Brown. He was such a lovely kid who would always stop and have a conversation.” The club extended heartfelt condolences to Mikey’s family, emphasizing the profound impact of this loss.
Social media tributes have flooded in, reflecting the sorrow felt throughout the community. One individual wrote, “God rest these poor young people Mikey Brown and Layla, who have sadly passed away in a car crash. Our deepest condolences to all their family, friends, and relatives at this devastating time.” Another user pleaded for prayers, expressing sympathy for the grieving families left behind.
Calls for Safety and Support
Local political leaders have also responded to the tragedy. John Blair, Alliance MLA for South Antrim, described the news as “the saddest of news coming from Glenavy.” He noted the community’s deep sense of shock and sadness, highlighting concerns about road safety in rural areas. “It’s the very worst news any family could receive, especially in the run-up to the Christmas period,” he stated, underscoring the emotional toll on families during this time.
Sinn Féin councillor Gary McCleave conveyed his condolences, stating, “This is heartbreaking news for the loved ones of both people who lost their lives.” He urged anyone with information about the crash to come forward to assist the investigation.
The PSNI has confirmed that inquiries are ongoing and is appealing to witnesses or anyone with digital footage to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at 101, referencing number 1121 22/11/25.
