A British tourist, Elaine McSorley, aged 71, has been missing for over a week after embarking on a hike near a crocodile-infested lake in South Africa. She and her husband, Leon McSorley, 81, set out from the Ghost Mountain Inn in KwaZulu Province on September 27, 2023, to explore the Mkhuze nature reserve.

Leon McSorley decided to return to their accommodation after struggling with the intense heat, while Elaine continued her trek into the wilderness. When she failed to return three hours later, her husband raised the alarm.

Despite the low crime rate in the area, authorities have been unable to locate Elaine. Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza of the South African Police Service stated, “We have been searching day and night but there is no sign of her. It is like she has vanished into thin air.”

Search efforts have involved local volunteers, police helicopters, and K9 units, yet no traces of Elaine have been found. The absence of evidence suggesting foul play has left investigators puzzled, particularly as the region is known for being safe for tourists.

Signage at the Ghost Mountain Inn warns visitors of the crocodiles that inhabit the nearby waters, raising concerns about Elaine’s safety. Local reports indicate that she had previously inquired about directions to the lake from a farmer. Leon also mentioned that Elaine intended to photograph a specific hippo during her hike.

The situation remains alarming as crocodiles are responsible for numerous fatalities across Africa each year. They possess the world’s strongest bite and can weigh up to 1,650 pounds, measuring up to 20 feet in length.

Community members have expressed their confusion regarding the couple’s actions, particularly Leon’s decision to check out of the hotel shortly after Elaine went missing. One local police forum member remarked, “It is a mystery as it is a very safe area for tourists, and there is no sign of a crime having happened.”

As the search continues, authorities are committed to uncovering what happened to Elaine McSorley, with local volunteers and law enforcement working tirelessly to locate her. The community remains hopeful for her safe return, while her family anxiously awaits news.
