The British Army has significantly increased its training activities at the Land Regional Hub Germany, with the number of field training exercises reaching 23 in 2025. This marks the highest level of training activity since 2017, reflecting a shift from a period of declining exercises in previous years.

The Ministry of Defence released a detailed ten-year report outlining the annual number of training exercises conducted at the hub. This data was provided in response to a parliamentary inquiry by James Cartlidge MP, who sought clarification on the number of exercises held over the past decade. Defence Minister Al Carns noted that the exercises are recorded by calendar year rather than by financial year.

Analysis of Training Activity Trends

According to the report, the number of field training exercises at the Land Regional Hub Germany has fluctuated over the years. In 2016, there were 32 exercises, but this number dropped to 26 in 2017 and 22 in 2018. A significant decline occurred in 2019, with only 11 exercises recorded. The lowest point in activity came in 2020, when just 5 exercises took place.

Following this low point, training activity began to recover. In 2021, the number of exercises rose to 8, and the subsequent years saw further increases: 11 in 2022 and 12 in 2023. The upward trend continued into 2024 with 16 exercises, culminating in the 23 exercises planned for 2025.

Implications of Increased Training Exercises

This resurgence in training exercises highlights the British Army’s commitment to maintaining a robust presence and operational readiness in Europe. The data indicates that more than four times as many exercises were conducted in 2025 compared to 2020, showcasing a shift in military strategy and preparedness.

Despite the positive trajectory, the current figures remain below the peak of 2016. The gradual increase since the low point of 2020 suggests a deliberate effort to enhance training capabilities and readiness in response to evolving security challenges in the region.

The Land Regional Hub Germany continues to play a vital role in the British Army’s training apparatus, facilitating a regular programme of exercises designed to improve operational effectiveness and foster collaboration with allied forces.

As military dynamics in Europe evolve, the sustained increase in training exercises underscores the importance of maintaining readiness and adaptability in a complex security environment.
