British Airways Pilot Shares Tips to Conquer Jetlag Effectively
Returning from a holiday can often bring a wave of exhaustion, particularly for those battling jetlag. Al Smith, a seasoned pilot and senior first officer for British Airways, offers practical advice on how to manage this common travel affliction. Drawing from his extensive experience flying across multiple time zones, Smith reveals simple yet effective strategies to combat the disorienting effects of jetlag.
In a recent feature of British Airways’ High Life magazine, Smith outlined his approach to maintaining alertness and comfort during long-haul flights. He emphasizes the importance of a consistent sleep routine, which he has refined over years of flying. “After years on short haul, I had a rhythm – early starts or late finishes, never both,” he shared. “But long haul is a different game.”
Planning ahead is crucial, according to Smith. He advises travelers to sleep before their departure, take a nap after landing, and fit in short rests whenever possible. “The key is prioritising rest and making time for it, no matter what time zone I’m in,” he noted.
Understanding Sleep Hygiene and Environment
One critical factor in managing jetlag is maintaining optimal sleep hygiene. Smith highlights how this can significantly aid the body in adjusting to new time zones. He recalls his experiences with relocating, stating, “Every time we’ve moved house, my first priority has been: ‘How do I make my new bedroom feel like the best hotel room ever?'”
To create an ideal sleep environment, Smith recommends using plantation shutters combined with blackout screens. “Total darkness is incredible and allows me to sleep both day and night,” he explained. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of temperature control, saying, “I think I have a two-degree tolerance before I’m either too hot or too cold.”
He points out that while the United Kingdom is known for its temperate climate, recent summers have seen temperatures reach as high as 40°C. In such conditions, he advocates for air-conditioning as a practical solution to ensure a comfortable sleeping environment. Quality bedding, he adds, is another essential component for restful sleep.
Overcoming Insomnia and Other Symptoms
Insomnia is a common symptom of jetlag that Smith has faced throughout his career. He recalls, “There have been occasions where oversleeping on what we call ‘landing day’ – a sacred day that should be free of tasks – has led to bouts of insomnia.” After years of experience, he has developed strategies to cope with sleepless nights.
Smith advises that if he checks the clock and it’s still within the same hour, he rises, enjoys a warm, non-caffeinated drink, and distracts himself with television. “Otherwise, I spend the entire night tossing and turning,” he admitted.
By implementing these straightforward techniques, travelers can better manage jetlag and enhance their overall travel experience. With insights from professionals like Smith, adjusting to new time zones can become a more manageable aspect of long-haul travel.
