Brave Boy, 11, Rescues Sister from Firework, Suffers Burns
A young boy in Wales has suffered severe burns after heroically stepping in front of a firework to protect his sister during a local display. On November 5, 2023, 11-year-old Olly was attending the event with his family when a firework malfunctioned and fired towards the crowd, heading directly toward his two-year-old sister, Daisy.
Recognizing the imminent danger, Olly quickly moved to shield Daisy, instructing his eight-year-old brother, Harri, to get out of the way. Tragically, the firework struck Olly’s coat, exploding upon impact and causing burns to his neck, fingers, and head. His mother, Charlotte, recounted the harrowing moment, stating, “All I saw was Olly shout at his little brother Harri to run, and then he got in front of his little sister.”
Immediately after the incident, Charlotte rushed Olly to Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran. Medical consultants collaborated with the specialist burns unit at Morriston Hospital to provide immediate care for his injuries.
The incident left not only Olly with physical scars but also the attending families shaken. Other parents expressed feelings of trauma on social media, with one mother, Emma Watkins, declaring she would “never be going to a fireworks display again.”
Although Olly has since been discharged from the hospital, he is taking time off school to recover from his injuries. He expressed disappointment about missing out on playing his bagpipes at an upcoming remembrance march. His piping ensemble referred to him as a “hero,” praising his bravery and selflessness.
A spokesperson for Piping Hot Cwmbran, a traditional bagpipe and folk music ensemble, highlighted Olly’s remarkable character, stating, “We can’t think of many 11-year-olds who would have the foresight to do what he did with total disregard for his own safety.” They reassured him he would still have the opportunity to participate by laying the poppy wreath representing the band at the remembrance parade.
Charlotte reflected on the traumatic experience, stating, “We will never be going to a fireworks display again. You think you are doing the safer thing by attending an organized event, but obviously not.”
As Olly begins his recovery, the emotional impact on him and his family lingers. Charlotte emphasized the need for safety at such events, underscoring the unpredictability of fireworks. Olly’s bravery may have saved his sister, but the consequences of that night will resonate with the family for years to come.
