A tragic shooting incident at Bondi Beach on December 10, 2023, left fifteen people dead and many others injured during a Hanukkah celebration. The event, which drew over 1,000 attendees to Archer Park, was disrupted when two gunmen opened fire shortly before 19:00. Among the casualties are a ten-year-old girl and a British-born rabbi. The suspected shooters, identified as Naveed Akram, 24, and his father, Sajid Akram, allegedly fired indiscriminately into the crowd, causing chaos as beachgoers fled for safety.

Local fruit seller Ahmed al Ahmed played a crucial role in the incident, managing to disarm Naveed Akram before police arrived and shot him. Naveed Akram sustained critical injuries and is currently in hospital under police guard. His father was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation and Background

In the aftermath of the attack, New South Wales Police launched an investigation that included searches of properties in Bonnyrigg and Campsie, areas where the Akram family resides. Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that a black ISIS flag was found draped over the attackers’ vehicle, which is a significant detail in the ongoing investigation.

Former classmates of Naveed Akram expressed shock upon seeing his image linked to the tragedy. Akram attended Cabramatta High School starting in Year 7 before leaving to work as a bricklayer. One classmate, Steven Luong, who played basketball with him, remarked, “I could have never imagined in 100 years that this could be his doing. He was a very nice person.” Another classmate described him as “one of the smart kids,” adding, “He was just normal. Nice. Quiet.”

The older Akram had a license for six firearms, which were confirmed to have been used in the attack. Authorities have clarified that no other suspects are currently being sought.

Family’s Response and Future Proceedings

Naveed Akram’s mother, Verena Akram, spoke to reporters from her home in Bonnyrigg, surrounded by police. She recounted her last conversation with her son, who had informed her he was out swimming and planned to stay home due to the heat. She expressed disbelief over the situation, stating, “He doesn’t have a firearm. He doesn’t even go out. He doesn’t mix around with friends.”

Verena Akram described her son as a private individual, asserting that he was not particularly social during school and had been working as a bricklayer until two months prior when his firm became insolvent. She emphasized that he led a quiet life, focused on work and exercise.

Naveed Akram is expected to survive his injuries and face criminal charges, according to police. His apprehension and the unfolding investigation remain a significant focus for law enforcement and the community in the wake of this devastating event.

As forensic teams continue to gather evidence at the scene, the community mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of this tragic shooting.
