Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva has pledged that his team will continue to fight for the Premier League title despite suffering a significant setback against local rivals Manchester United. The defeat increased the gap to league leaders Arsenal to seven points, raising concerns about City’s title aspirations.

In a tense derby match, City struggled to find their rhythm. Both Amad and Bruno Fernandes had goals disallowed for offside during the first half, leaving the match level at the break. However, City could not maintain their defensive composure in the second half. Following a quick break from a free kick, Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for United. Just 11 minutes later, Patrick Dorgu capitalized on a lapse in concentration from City’s defense to extend the lead to 2-0.

Despite a late effort to equalize, City thought they had conceded a third goal in stoppage time, but VAR intervened to rule out Mason Mount‘s goal due to an offside in the build-up. The final score was a blow for City, who now face an uphill battle in the title race as Arsenal maintains their impressive form at the top of the table.

Silva acknowledged the challenges ahead but remains optimistic about his team’s prospects. “It is a big gap, we won’t lie and say it isn’t a big gap, it is,” he stated. “We will fight until the end.” He also reflected on the performance, admitting that United “deserved to win today” and that his team lacked the necessary energy and control throughout the match.

“There were a lot of things missing from us. Definitely a bad day for us,” Silva added. “After a day like today, I don’t think we have any excuses. It was a really bad performance from us.”

While the derby loss is disappointing, City must refocus their efforts on the broader title race. In a twist of fate, Arsenal dropped points in their match against Nottingham Forest, ending in a goalless draw. This result means City still has a chance to close the gap, especially with a crucial match against Arsenal scheduled at the Etihad Stadium later in the season.

Looking ahead, City’s next challenge will be a trip to face Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening, where they will aim to regain momentum and confidence. With the Premier League title still within reach, Silva’s leadership and determination will be vital as City navigates the remainder of the season.
