Ancient Pompeii Graffiti Uncovered: Risqué Messages from AD 79
Recent discoveries in Pompeii have unveiled a collection of ancient graffiti that reveals the more risqué aspects of life nearly 2,000 years ago. Archaeologists, utilizing advanced technology, have identified 79 pieces of previously undocumented graffiti in a corridor believed to have served as a public urinal. These inscriptions, which include crude humor and intimate messages, offer a glimpse into the social dynamics of the Roman era.
The corridor links the theatre district of Pompeii with the via Stabiana. While the wall had been excavated over 230 years ago and is viewed by millions of tourists annually, researchers from the project dubbed Bruits de couloir (Rumours) have discovered additional insights. The team, led by Louis Autin and Éloïse Letellier-Taillefer from the Sorbonne, in collaboration with Marie-Adeline Le Guennec from the University of Quebec in Montreal, has identified nearly 300 inscriptions, with around 200 already known and 79 newly recorded.
Utilizing Technology to Uncover History
The findings emerged from research campaigns conducted in 2022 and 2025, recently published in the E-journal of the Excavations of Pompeii. The researchers employed a multidisciplinary approach that integrates epigraphy, archaeology, philology, and digital humanities. This method allowed them to reinterpret the graffiti preserved in the corridor, which reflects a range of messages from affectionate notes to crude insults.
Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, emphasized the transformative role of technology in enhancing our understanding of ancient sites. “Technology is the key that is shedding new light on the ancient world, and we need to inform the public of these new discoveries,” he stated. Zuchtriegel also highlighted an ongoing project aimed at protecting and enhancing the understanding of the over 10,000 graffiti found across Pompeii, an important legacy of the city’s vibrant history.
To facilitate the study of these inscriptions, researchers created a virtual grid to map their positions, identifying spatial and thematic connections. The walls of the corridor were documented using Reflectance Transformation Imaging, a technique that captures multiple photographs under varying lighting conditions to reveal details that are otherwise invisible. This data will contribute to a new 3D digital platform that combines photogrammetry, imaging, and epigraphic records, allowing for a comprehensive visualization and study of the inscriptions.
Preserving Pompeii’s Ancient Voices
Plans are underway to construct a protective roof over the corridor to safeguard the graffiti for future generations. Archaeological Park officials aim to conserve the plaster on which these messages were inscribed while leveraging technology to enhance visitor understanding. The initiative embodies a commitment to preserving the rich tapestry of life in ancient Pompeii, ensuring that these voices from the past continue to resonate with visitors and researchers alike.
The graffiti not only serves as a captivating historical record but also as a reminder of the enduring human experiences that transcend time. As excavation techniques and technology evolve, further insights into the daily lives of ancient Romans are likely to emerge, continuing to enrich our understanding of this remarkable civilization.
