Air Canada’s A321XLR Routes Set to Transform Long-Haul Travel

Air Canada is expanding its long-haul services with the introduction of new routes using the Airbus A321XLR, poised to significantly enhance travel options between Canada and Southern Europe. The airline’s initial routes include direct flights from Montreal to Palma de Mallorca, starting in June 2025, marking the first scheduled service from Canada to the Balearic Islands.
In addition, Air Canada will operate flights from Montreal to Toulouse and Edinburgh, effectively replacing previous services operated by the Boeing 787-8 and the Boeing 737 MAX 8. These routes will be among the first long-haul A321XLR operations to France and the UK, although they do not rank among the longest flights currently available.
Notable Long-Haul A321XLR Flights
As of now, several long-haul routes have been identified for the A321XLR, all exceeding eight hours and thirty minutes of flight time. The following list ranks these routes by maximum block time, which reflects the longest expected duration for these flights:
– **9h 40m** – Madrid to Washington Dulles (Iberia)
– **9h 35m** – Madrid to Santo Domingo (Iberia; starts October 2, 2025)
– **9h 20m** – Dublin to Nashville (Aer Lingus; started April 12, 2025)
– **9h 15m** – Madrid to New York JFK (Iberia; starts October 26, 2025)
– **9h 05m** – Madrid to San Juan (Iberia; starts September 13, 2025)
– **9h 00m** – Madrid to Recife (Iberia; returning December 13, 2025)
– **8h 55m** – Palma de Mallorca to Montreal (Air Canada; starting June 17, 2025)
– **8h 50m** – Madrid to Fortaleza (Iberia; returning January 19, 2026)
– **8h 50m** – Dublin to Indianapolis (Aer Lingus; started May 3, 2025)
– **8h 45m** – Madrid to Boston (Iberia)
These flights are designed to maximize capacity and efficiency, with the A321XLR offering a range of 3,920 nautical miles, which allows for a diverse array of international routes.
Air Canada’s Historic Route to Palma de Mallorca
Air Canada’s service to Palma will operate from June 17 until October 24, featuring flights with a maximum duration of up to 8h 55m. This new connection is expected to significantly boost traffic from North America to Southern Europe, a region that has seen increasing demand for direct flights.
In 2024, fewer than 15,000 passengers traveled between Canada and Palma, indicating a substantial opportunity for growth. With nonstop flights and targeted promotions, the airline aims to attract travelers from major US cities like New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago, where demand is robust.
United Airlines has already established a seasonal route between Newark and Palma, achieving an 84% seat occupancy rate in the previous year, suggesting strong market interest. The addition of Air Canada to this route network underscores the growing trend of long-haul services to less accessible destinations.
Expansion in South America
The A321XLR is also set to debut its first South American flight from Madrid to Recife on December 13, 2025, coinciding with the holiday travel season. Following this, a service to Fortaleza will commence a month later. These routes highlight the aircraft’s capacity to connect regions with increasing tourism potential, particularly as both cities have experienced economic growth.
Historically, Recife and Fortaleza were part of Iberia’s network over a decade ago, when the airline operated these routes with its A340 fleet. The introduction of the A321XLR represents a strategic shift, allowing Iberia to re-enter these markets with lower operational costs and reduced risk compared to widebody aircraft.
The ongoing expansion of Airbus A321XLR services reflects a significant evolution in long-haul flight capabilities, enabling airlines to explore new markets and connect passengers with previously underserved destinations. As Air Canada and Iberia expand their offerings, travelers can look forward to more efficient and accessible options for international travel.
